Why #America is fat and unhappy – #Harvard #psychologist Steven Pinker

GZERO Media

It’s a good time to be alive in America. The wealthiest nation on earth, though, is full of unhappy people, Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker points out on GZERO World with Ian Bremmer.

He explains that the US is an outlier among affluent Western democracies. It’s rich. It’s more or less democratic. Yet it has a lower life expectancy than its counterparts. It has poor scores on math tests, more obesity, more drug addiction, and more violence.

  1. Canada does an excellent job of managing a country larger than the US, with only 1/10 the population. While the US denigrates our medical system (which we all agree could use improvement), our costs are about half, per person, and average lifespan is 4-5 years greater. As well, going in for a medical procedure doesn’t mean you lose your house! Can MAGA explain that? We’ve travelled extensively through the US and have witnessed abject poverty and homelessness at a level that we’ve NEVER seen in Canada! How is that possible in the wealthiest country in the world? Can the fuming, angry red ball cap crowd enlighten us?

  2. Everyone wants to point to costs and funding programs. It is the metrics being optimized towards via the lack of coherent, vertical value system. Those are the roots

  3. General education and the massive disparity in wealth and opportunity. Some will scream communism or socialism, but extreme greed of the less than 1% is really a huge problem when it leaves the rest of their citizens under educated, tired and so relatively poor. I just keep thinking "bread and circuses".

  4. Maybe it’s time Americans stop letting Harvard grads and professors like Pinker run the country because fancy words and bad ides don’t fix broken streets and societies.

  5. Another issue is gap in wealth via asset holdings, vast majority of Americans, that is to say modaly rather than the mean, don't have much economic power or punch.
That data is hard for me to find, but I would guess the modal income in the US for full time workers is still probably sub-$40,000. That doesn't go too far pretty much anywhere nowadays.
Freedom is also increasingly stifled, both economically and socially, so that up in the air.
American healthcare is vast in capability, but the economic barriers are simply too great for thiwe without wealth to access.
Foreigners with wealth can access the best of America's healthcare before poor citizens ever could think of it.

  6. A country populated by 'the grass is always greener ' immigrants may be destined genetically to never be happy with their lot.

My second point would be these same immigrants came to the USA for purely economic reasons. The mighty dollar is what underpins the culture, not education or culture or philosophy. Thru slavery and genocide the US grew spectacularly in a few generations. Perhaps any society based on such a history carries much guilt. It is certainly not likely to yield a happy population….. certainly not while it remains in denial of this past.

The old joke that the USA went from Barbarism to decadence without the intervening period of civilization is probably very true. This can not be the recipe for a healthy happy society. I'm not sure the place deserves any better.

( I so wanted to say the explanation was religion…. but I think that a symptom not a cause )

  7. This guy is one of the biggest morons out there. Either that, or he's a charlatan who doesn't believe his own BS. But I think it's more likely that he's blinded into stupidity by his own extreme privilege.

  8. The white hair stupid man is very elitist an racist, listening this cactus I feel like eating, tones of fatal, rhis guy is so superior!, he looks like god

  9. Income inequality. That is the reason, backed up by massive pan national research by Wilkinson and Pikety 2009. Stephen is not the most well read psychologist

  10. First-world countries' petty fights about who's suffering more really can't get sympathy from me. I came from a third world country, Brazil, we're this close to having a dictatorship and becoming like Venezuela. I know people from Brazil who went to US before the whole ICE thing. They worked as domestic clearners and all that low-paying jobs… they came back to Brazil with enough money to buy house, car and live well. Americans in average all have a car (if they want to), and they can buy a house if they work for it… in Brazil you can't buy a house even if you work your whole life. There are taxes even in breathing and the Government is always offering programs and money for people in poor and miserable conditions. But what does this do? This makes these same people not want to work for a better life, because the government is paying them to continue being poor. I wish I could live in the US. Don't care about the problems, just need someone to take me away from this country before it sinks into a full socialist dictatorship.

Spirit is also highlighting the need for you to trust your own intuition, and no one else’s at this time. I see unwarranted madvice from someone around you. You are the Express and the Emperor! You know what is best for you above all. Stand your ground and Protect your energy.

  12. the professor has it wrong in one aspect, the "more or less democratic" USA has a one party system, the corporate party, blue or red, the two competing "ideologies" still revolve around serving the oligarchs (native or foreign) and their corporate interests.

  13. USA also has more economic growth than those other countries. The other affluent western countries redistribute more wealth (through taxation) and have more workers rights etc, and this may account for what Pinker is talking about, but maybe also the lower economic growth.

  14. The poor work for the wealthy with little return. We funnel the benefits of labor to the very top and we foolishly relish in it. Not realizing the disparity we’ve allowed to be created because too many are happy with being able to shop at Walmart and Amazon (which make the wealthy even wealthier).
