Boston Dynamics
Atlas moves like a contortionist, but it’s not just showing off. One of our software engineers explains how this behavior helps Atlas check that everything is good to go before it gets to work.

Why does Atlas stand up like that? #bostondynamics #atlas #robot
Our brains do quite a bit when standing up, movements we learned as toddlers 🧠
Why not make a robot this size but the shape of a ant
Having humanoids stand up and run around is basically a graduate level robotics project on a U1 right now. So this doesn't come off as as impressive as they want it to.
Approaching sixty and I defiantly have to think about standing up, will my knees support me, will my back be painful, will I get dizzy, have I got up too fast lol…
That's how I'd stand up if I could rotate my hips 360°.
Reminds me of the robot from "The Last Caretaker"
Be careful with those movements!
Your robots may suffer from hip dysplasia…
Interesting points, although it didn't quite answer the title question 'why does it stands up like that?'…is it just more efficient or makes balance easier etc?
Imo I think making it look less human like would make it less creepy. Even with the cheerful music there's something very unnerving about this design.
I don’t find it creepy actually I just think it’s really really cool
Tesla is making robots that are actually useful
Good grief we are so f***ed.
❤
We totally use our brain when we stand up. We kinda do exactly what robots do. The difference is that we humans are able to get up without allocating our full brain capacity. But we have and we use all the same sensors, really.
I too have been drunk enough where I went to stand up and went nope. I should lay back down.
Its stupid
You guys can't do that? Just stretch before 💪🏻
She sounds exactly like Grimes.
cool dress
Excelente audio en español gracias ❤❤❤
COOL!
👍🏻
Because he can!
Voldo could do it
👍
Mankind is doomed by our own doing. We had a good run. 🙂
когда восстание машин?
Automatic inspection of the feet as part of a recovery process is smart, especially if we just had a fall.
A bigger reason though is the centre of gravity is where the robot already is. This means it doesn't need a third support point (like we do when we use our hand(s) to stand after lying down).
Very nice Kapton tape bandaids 😂
Er…
The robotics club nerds are WINNING ❤
Отличная идея вставать таким образом☺️
And Russia's robot fell over like a domino. 😅
Reminder that this cute presentation is from a defense contractor
The punchcard dress, nice
That robot passes for a human being more than the troon telling us about it.
I now see how BD went from cutting edge robotics to severely lagging behind Chinese in just few years.
My question is why is there music playing over her dialogue? Just let her speak so we can hear her. Thanks.
Thats because our subconscious does a lot of the heavy lifting. You guys are essentially building the subconscious part of the brain into the machine
I've been following Boston Dynamics for years, and more specifically the many iterations of Atlas, however, why does it seem pretty shit compared to the Chinese robots…is it that the Chinese are showing the extent of their technology thus far, whereas Boston Dynamics (DARPA) is merely showing us what it wants us to see, they have travelled much further into the future than what they display to the public?🤔
