Otherwords is a new PBS web series on Storied that digs deep into this quintessential human trait of language and fınds the fascinating, thought-provoking, and funny stories behind the words and sounds we take for granted. Incorporating the fıelds of biology, history, cultural studies, literature, and more, linguistics has something for everyone and offers a unique perspective into what it means to be human.
Host and writer Erica Brozovsky is a sociolinguist and a lover of language variation. As a native of Massachusetts, but a longtime Texas transplant, “wicked” and “y’all” happily coexist in her idiolect. Erica received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin where she studied language and identity. She currently teaches courses there on Asian American Literature and Culture and English Language and Its Social Context. .

i love the idea of this channel. I think about this stuff all the time. Like in the car today was thinking Dandruff, Dandelion and Dander must all have the same root.
I’m so excited for this!
This is expletiveing exciting!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽💥💥💥
Man, I am SO hyped for this
Is this a channel?
SO COOL!!
So excited!
So can we all agree some professors/doctors were jerks when coming up with the words that describe a fear? Is the fear of really long words being a really long word some vaguely sadistic idea of a joke??
That ending where she said "on otherwords" was so jarring since I thought it was going to be a play on "in other words…" but then it stopped abruptly. Lol. Looking forward to the series!
I'm so in
I’m excited!!
Eagerly waiting for this show to produce a great number of eye-opening videos. (I literally learned about this show on a video about eyes).
Do MATHS!!! (as in the history of the word Maths.. why do we use a "S")
Much love
Eons gang, checking in!
this deserves its own channel
I'm excited for this channel! How do we all feel about the "forbidden experiment", that is when a human child is taken and raised without any human contact and more specifically any linguistic contact, What becomes of the supposedly " super sophisticatedly advanced" object of our praise, the human brain?
Eons sent me and I can tell this is going to be great!!
A request if you don't mind! The English days of the week seemed to be named after the sun, the moon, a string of German gods, then one singular Roman god. The Roman god sticks out like a sore thumb, but wikipedia references that Saturday could be a reference to Loki (it's disputed, but would fit nicely into the German god category). How do we reconcile these inconsistencies in word groups that seem like they should have changed as whole (having the Saxons to name all days after Roman gods) rather than only changing as parts (just Saturday). I'm looking at you too, months of the year!
Between this show and Tom Scott's linguistics series, I am a very happy camper!
TwoCents sent me here 😂
I think I've watched all the episodes included in this trailer.
