Lyrics
See the Spaniard eating chocolates
see the Spaniard have a ball
see the Spaniard trust in no one
he’s on quality street
he’s on quality street
as the masters rot on walls
and the angels eat their grapes
I watched Picasso visit The Planet Of The Apes
as the masters rot on walls
and the angels eat their grapes
I watched Picasso
Pablo Picasso
visit The Planet Of The Apes (yeah)
see the Spaniard seek companion
see the Spaniard take it all
see the Spaniard sell his friends out
he’s on quality street
he’s on quality street
and pretenders pretend
to their patronage lend
but it’s the ones we don’t see
that always fascinate me
as the masters rot on walls
and the angels eat their grapes
I watched Picasso visit The Planet Of The Apes
as the masters rot on walls
and the angels eat their grapes
I watched Picasso
Pablo Picasso
visit The Planet Of The Apes (yeah)
as the real heroes died
and their ideas supplied
to a fat little magpie
with money in his eyes
they bowed and they scraped
as opinions he shaped
now every little sketch a fortune will fetch
and the bleach killer kills
and the bleach killer kills yeah
and as the masters rot on walls (see the Spaniard sell the whole world)…

  1. I wasnt a fan of Adam n the Ants back in the 80's. More to Duran Duran, Spandau ballet, kaftwerk…but now in the 2020 at age 55, l kinda like his masterpiece. Adam is unique! In this 2020 era, he sounds refreshing. I regretted not enjoying his music back then.

  2. I love reading all these fan comments!
AA is always in our hearts! Love you Stuart!
Michael Jackson often called him for fashion advice! That's pretty solid!

  3. Legend says this song is about Adam's journey to Spain in the early eighties. He had dinner with spanish singers Miguel Bosé and Alaska, who were the big thing at the time (you can easily see Adam's influence on young Alaska, she even was president to the spanish Adam fanclub) in Bosé's house. Bosé was high and being annoying and Alaska spent all night insinuating at Adam. She also ate so much chocolate. Adam disliked them so much he went to hide in the bathroom, where he found it was decorated with Picasso drawings (Bosé's family has a long tradition of artists and they were friends with Picasso himself). Later on, Alaska went to say that she found Adam dull and boring and she stopped being a fan. Wether this is the real story or not I like to think it is, as a spaniard myself I find it funny, specially now that Alaska and Bosé have become that kind of unbereable self-indulgent, self-absorbed and dislikeable type of artist.

  4. All these years later I still laugh when Adam sings "Picasso visits the planet of the apes." I thought "Beneath The Planet Of The Apes" was a good laugh, but Adam blew that one away. Pablo Picasso visits the planet of the apes? How in hell did Adam ever come up with such lunacy?

  5. My mum bought me the Prince Charming LP for my 12th birthday and this was my favourite track, every time I hear it, it takes me back to those care free days when nothing seemed to matter and one had lots of friends. I've still got the record as well even after all these years.

  6. Too bad Picasso couldn’t make a painting about how Adam and the Ants ripped off African drumming instead of playing Mozart.

  7. Picasso was he genius or pervert, I found a library book of alternate Picasso the pervert, well you could say he has lost my respect and is way done the order of ratings. Tom the black Affro Caribean artist at tesco art class was good at Dildo's

  8. A lot of people talk about bands that were ahead of their time. I suggest this song and it's harmonies…This is in the mix of that discussion. Some wild stuff here!
