Haptic Technology Demonstration – with Danielle George

Haptic technology recreates the sensation of touch through forces and vibrations. In this clip from the 2014 CHRISTMAS LECTURES “Sparks will fly: How to hack your home”, Danielle George and a young audience member experiment with haptic technology. This piece of kit recreates the feeling of touch by using tiny speakers to create precise ultrasonic vibrations and mould the shape of an object.

  2. So utterly underwhelming. Edit: "We can't hear them but he can see them." she says, after we clearly heard the demonstration and were told it'll make noise so they can't speak. What a crock of shite. I wonder how many billions of tax payers money went into this stupidity? I'm all for diversion of more funding to science and R&D, but these pie in the sky things are ridiculous. Like the tens of thousands of Portal (the video game) turrets being churned out with grant money by masters students in robotics that are so utterly crap in quality they're laughable.

  4. You are not supposed to put your hands in an ultrasonic jeweler cleaner when it's on as some hours later the finger joints can become very painful. I'd be concerned with prolonged exposure from this type of interface.

  5. Why are they so tiny like the ones used in the sound beam, which produce high frequencies?
    I thought you can't feel much above 500 Hz? Is it doing Amplitude Modulation in order to
    produce low frequencies below 500 Hz, just like the sound beam does for the audible sounds?
