A consciousness-only view of reality & psychedelic science with Bernardo Kastrup | Living Mirrors#10

Dr. James Cooke

This episode is a conversation with Bernardo Kastrup. Bernardo is a philosopher of mind with a background in computer science. He has PhDs in both disciplines and has written 9 books including rationalist spirituality, why materialism is baloney, the idea of the world and recent studies of the works of Schopenhauer and Carl Jung. Our chat was focused on his “consciousness-only” view of reality.

We live in a world filled with suffering, where attempts to help have been split into largely separate scientific and spiritual communities. As a spiritually engaged neuroscientist I hope to communicate how these seemingly separate world views can be reconciled. I produce weekly videos on topics at the intersection of neuroscience and wellbeing, including consciousness, meditation and psychedelic science.

Dr. James Cooke:
Neuroscientist, writer & speaker, focusing on perception, meditation, psychedelics, mental health and wellbeing.
PhD in Neuroscience, Oxford University
MSc in Neuroscience, Oxford University

  1. At last I have discovered a you tube site that is really interested in Science and not a sophisticated form of Scientism. Having freed myself from organised religion, sites like ‘Closer to The Truth ‘ have set themselves up as objective scientists / philosopher kings, but in reality have only created a sophisticated form of Scientism. However those sites are just a flimsy Trojan horse for pushing unadulterated Physical Realism, Panpsychism or Idealism. In addition the only scientists/philosophers who they choose to invite to speak in opposition to their well known Physical Realists Pan-psychists or Idealists are theologians/ scientists who have lame duck arguments that are either out moded or incomprehensible.

  2. Consciousness?  Reality? Have you ever seen a toddle eat ice cream while sleeping? Have you ever seen a fetus peeing in a mother's uterus? These are realities of Consciousness.

  3. The reality we construct with out minds, is not constructed by the material mind but the universal mind using a material substrate for its thought……is one perspective on this, but the material substrate is the hardware in this case, kastrup is reconstructing this system without hardware…only software….quite a curious mess we have got ourselves into

  4. brilliant video, agree so much with Dr kastrup absolutely brilliant man!!would love to a also converse with you on this subject from view of spiritual experience as well as psychedelic experience and the connection to our view of reality as well as explaining mind healing the body ,what is physical?and what is love and potential reason for psychic type experienve..thanks for your wonderful work

  5. Bernardo, in case you read this, ketimine(precise IM) can be exactly what your friend with the headaches is looking for. Read John C Lilly for starters & I personally know someone with a very similar story. Though not a psychedelic, it is indeed thE most interesting substance I'm aware of, DMT included.

  6. To me time is just the way we measure change. If nothing changed, time would not exist. The absolute is outside of time because it doesn't change. The alters it creates change, come and go, but the absolute itself, is changeless. It is outside of time.

  7. From personal experience last year: I had brain freeze w/o anything cold being consumed, and shortly thereafter I felt my 3rd eye open, meaning the DMT-delivering duct had to enlarge to allow larger meo5 DMT crystals out. It hurt like hell in the middle of my forehead for a few days, then the stuff started flowing. I theorize that a mass gap theory of consciousness is necessary to explain this sense experience. I swallowed theoretical physics and the math underpinning it, supposed still mysterious, as catastrophic ML failures indicate. All casually and on You Tube.

Based on the confounded logic of tunneling events, I think a radiation particle hit me in the head (brain freeze; cold fusion Quantum Consciousness) and changed the endogenous chemical course correction systems in my brain. And now in a "normal" state of consciousness, I realize it is a matter of attention that leads to this hyper awareness of internal systems. There are no nerve endings in the brain, but I felt it in the sinus cavities nearest the excretion, same as the brain freeze. My very limited knowledge of brain chemistry leads me to believe that the cannabinoid and opioid systems and the "psychedelic" system(s) can interact in a brain with a stronger EM field to change crystal size and structure. A scaling if you will in a chemical carrier (?) of consciousness. I understand now that I was walking around in a 2 week tour or reality, a waking dream in biochemistry, with the curtain gone. It was like being an ant powered by the power grid of a major city.

Now I'm a miserable bastard again, but still no mysteries, only loss of hope for better. U(t) is the quantum computation term for this connection; in carbon it is supposed to be woo. Nah, bro. Check out the Thomas Nagel callout video on my channel. No real hard problem to me, just geometry of sense inputs, and topology of processing, with default mode and predictive engine as probable binary brain time stamps in the latency problem. These bundle into the Phi of IIT, a crude starting point mathematically. I also have a Consciousness-first TOE, which I call Dimensional Gauge Symmetry. But I tried to present it and no one who could understand would engage. I will listen to this when I get a chance.

  8. 18:00 I don't understand how a "mental scalpel", or a mental thing which appears to me as a scalpel, can damage a "mental brain" ?? As he said, I don't understand how the causality may be mental (what does it even mean ?) and how these causal events can give rise to some subjective experiences which are radically different (for the surgeon and the patient).

At 34:50, he is asked what's the reason why our subjective experience (a dissociation) appears the way it is if the only reality is a unique mental whole. He answers that's because it is the way it is…
This is as empty as the materialist answer to the hard problem : why does such brain state give rise to such feeling ? Well, because it is like that, there is a correlation between consciousness and the brain…
I don't see what his philosophy explains, absolutely nothing, it is an assumption as valid as any other. At least materialism gives a very good basis to explain causality.

51:34 and later when he talks about Dante and the symbolic qualities traditionnally associated with objects, colors, and so on, how can we have access to these "states in themselves" if our consciousness is fundamentaly dissociated from the rest of the universal mind ?
One can also imagine that there are different levels, or plans of reality, which are all real in their own right. With the senses, we can perceive the physical world through our nervous system, and our feeling are a consequence of the state of this system. When we focus our mind on an external object or an inner representation, we create a link with the platonic idea of that object and we can get some intuitive knowledge from that, because our essence is beyond time and have access to any information. I don't understand why this intuitive knowledge should be "more real" than the physical world, it is just another layer of reality.

Also, I don't like this analogy with a computer dashboard. If our conscious experience of the external world is just a representation built to give us the information we need to adapt to our environnement, why do we have so many unnecessary details ? Animals for example should look like pokemon, or like a geometric shape with a certain color so we can know if it is good to eat or not, or if it is agressive or neutral. Why do we see all these details like the hair, the teeth ? Why do we see oll the organs, veins and so on if we open their body ? This sould not be possible if the perception was based only on natural selection for survival. A thrash icon on a dashborad for example has nothing to deal with what's going on in the computer, in the hard drive, so if you look closely to the icon, you won't learn more about the reality, whereas in the perception of the external world, it is obvious that we can get always more information which are always true and consistent, so it is possible to say that our perception is limited, but not that is is a complete nonsense, or a representation which has nothing to deal with reality.

  9. In this model 'we' are a disassociated 'expression' or 'form' of Universal Consciousness. So why go to the trouble to state that Universal Consciousness doesn't have a plan. We have conscious planning, so by definition a Naturalist Idealist philosophy should embrace a Universal Consciousness with at least the same attributes. I would suggest an evolution (developmental model) of Consciousness.

  10. Another incredible interview James and wonderful as always Bernardo. This is sublime. The absolute peak of thought provoking content and discourse. Thank you! Wishing you both the best in these new(ish) endeavours.

  11. 33:02 "As a matter of fact, matter is what experiential states look like from across a dissociative boundary". I c wut u did therr. 11/10 would pun again

  12. What an amazing surprise on my feed! Two of my absolute favorites on YouTube together… This is Hugely important work for the next step in our cultural evolution, keep killing it both of you!
