AI 101 [Part 3]: Intelligent Agents

AI and Games

In part 3 of this series, we define the idea of an ‘agent’. Agents are one of the key foundations of AI theory and we discuss what an agent is and how we humans often fail to act as one.

  1. why must agents be rational to be classified as an agent? When the perceived reward is different from the actual reward shouldn't they always be fooled just like a human or any other animal. Playing craps at the casino, clearly isn't rational, but we do it anyway because it rewards us. What do you really gain by excluding an agent who would choose to do irrational things? and what are those then?

  2. This video makes me slightly confused. Does an intelligent agent have to make optimal decisions or not? At 1:10 it seems like you're saying that all agents need to satisfy 4 criteria, among others making only rational decisions, i.e. optimal decisions. However, at 5:00 you seem to differentiate between rational agents and intelligent agents.

So does an intelligent agent have to make optimal decisions or not? If it does, I guess you wouldn't call a chess engine an agent, since it doesn't play optimally? Or would you?

  3. All actions are based on both desires and beliefs. While beliefs may be rational, desires can never be. Desires are emotional. If humans were perfectly rational, they would never do anything because even the desire to continue living is emotional, not rational.
