Alice Roberts – Apatite, the Memento Mori

The Royal Institution

Professor Alice Roberts shows her love for calcium and how efficient the human skeleton can be. Did you know that the calcium in our bones are replaced every 5 to 10 years?

Each day in December, we’ll publish a new video revealing the elements that really excite and inspire people.

  1. Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him, Horatio. I kept expecting her to break out in this soliloquy at any moment. If I ever play Hamlet, I definitely want to get a cast of my own skull like this. Not only would it be just really cool, it should also create a mirror effect that the audience would pick up on subconsciously.

  2. Something I have always wondered is how accurate the facial reconstructions that are done of ancient skulls in museums/history shows are. I think a cool thing if you cared to do, would be to send out your skull model to 5 or more different 'reconstruction' artists and see how close they get to your likeness (of course they shouldn't know that the skull is yours). Cheers!
