Alva Noë – Why a Mind-Body Problem?

Closer To Truth

How does the brain produce the mind? This is one of the most difficult problems in science, because how can physical qualities, no matter how complex and sophisticated, actually be mental experiences? Electrical impulses and chemical flows are not at all the kind of stuff that thoughts and feelings are. The physical and the mental are different categories.

  1. His response follows the idea that the mind is an illusion. The brain cannot produce consciousness without external factors whether those factors come from a simulated reality or actual reality.

  2. The brain does not produce the mind and there is no mind-body problem.
Consciousness is fundamental and composes all of reality. Hence there aren't two different causal stories that need to be reconciled since there is only one type of substance and one type of causation: mental

  3. There are 5 observable categories of phenomena.
There is Form or Pattern. (shape)
    There is Sensation. (dualistic feeling)
    There is Perception. (Qualia/and label)
There is perception Of form ("square" "circle"…)
There is perception of sensation ("pleasant", "unpleasant"
If there is a word for a thing THAT is a perception.
There is Intention. (Will to action)

    Intentions are informed by perceptions.
    The basic intentions are
    A. Move toward all that is 1. nourishing 2.pleasant 3 "good" 4. "beautiful" etc…
    B. Move away from that which opposes A. If A and B are in the same locale either Take A or Push B out.

There is consciousness. (There is form consciousness) (There is feeling about form) (There is The (thought label) perception/evaluation "good" or "bad" or "pleasant" or "unpleasant" or "neutral"…

These Five aspects of observable reality do not include categories like "self" "world" "mind" "matter".
All phenomena can be explained in terms of these 5.
No phenomena require us to go into the realm of (unobservable) imagination and speculation

Matter is a perception fabricated in the imagination by intentions informed by form, sensation, other perceptions and an ALL MIGHTY PERCEPTION OF SELF.

When you look at the actual facts available to consciousness and strip all the Perceptions out; the Stories of universes and selves and all that WORD garbage, You are left with reality.

Anyone who speaks of "REALITY" has trodden directly through the pile of speculation and imagination.

It's hard to step in a pile and not get any on you.

  4. Syntax cannot magically breed semantics and therefore computers cannot create consciousness.
Tell a computer to answer, "yes" when asked if it is conscious. Even a perfect simulation would just be an illusion. Descartes would even agree that the illusion isn't of consciousness, rather, we are being fooled into thinking the robot is conscious.

  5. This is one of the best episodes ever. They really had a good deep discussion and I loved the neuroplasticity based argument! I never thought about it like that. Although if you take a stem cell and move it to an organ it will start functioning like the other cells around it. That includes the liver and heart etc…so why think of consciousness any differently then say producing bile or pumping blood?
