Asking a Theoretical Physicist About the Physics of Consciousness | Roger Penrose | EP 244

Jordan B Peterson

Dr. Peterson recently traveled to the UK for a series of lectures at Oxford and Cambridge. This conversation was recorded during that period with Sir Roger Penrose, a British mathematical physicist who was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for “discovering that black hole formation is a robust predictor of Einstein’s general relativity.”

Moderated by Dr. Stephen Blackwood.

  1. Ask why Eurocentric developments have led to a domintation of the world, cutlurally speaking. Then ask what percentage of discusssions of this nature do not involve people of European origin.

  2. A problem in explaining consciousness is how does our experience of awareness as the instant called “now” include awareness of duration and flow. Consider that debate or explanation does not afford the idea that no one is listening, the flow would stop or have a gap in its duration. So, the physics of debate or explanation does not afford the idea that no one is listening, requiring (creating or generating) what is called a “conscious listener” in the physical world. During a debate or an explanation, we are sometimes made aware of something vividly, proving debate and explanation are physical mechanisms that automatically generate awareness (consciousness). For example, a debate about what happened in the past becomes a duration, instead of just the current instant, of awareness.

  3. Computation is derived from consciousness. Conscious was born from subconscious. Thoughts go up like wind does in formation of rain and when it comes down if it lands anywhere beside salt water it is saved in memory , otherwise not saved as it falls in salt water the subconcious. Concious is the island with sweet water within the subcocious sea of salt water.

  4. What really is consciousness ? it's only the driver of the body the body being a car
So everything we are , is just consciousness

  5. Even the smartest guy on the plant, Sir Roger, didn't have a clue what Stephen Blackwood was going on about at the end, with his rather pretentious rambling question/s, but a good session nonetheless.

  6. Grasping the subject matter is not so problematic as watching the foreground outside of the interview room, and indeed the interview room floor, as gauged by the climate vents and bookshelf, oscillating back and forth. And yet their chairs appear static. Maybe an autonomous camera is the culprit. 🤵🥴

  7. The conscious philosopher “I” (called Atman in Hindu) is automatically generated within ordinary sound waves whenever debate or explanation occurs because there is no time gap during debate or explanation to afford the idea that no one is listening.

  8. A key point of Penrose (that I agree with): Consciousness is non-computable. Wolfram is stuck in computability, but you can prove for yourself who is right. Access "Mahamritunjaya mantra – Sacred Sounds Choir" and listen to it for 5 min per day for at least two weeks. You will tap into and merge with Pure Consciousness In-Itself. This realm of Sat-Chit-Ananda transcends randomness and thought itself. Sorry to say this, but JP's mind is operating on a superficial level that a legal dose of a psychedelic should easily dispel but better yet, the Mahamritunjaya mantra.
JP asks, what does Consciousness "do"? Find out for yourself. The big question is what IS Consciousness, "In-Itself", or what Aristotle called Being-In-Itself.

  9. If intelligence equals how well is each piece of the universe fitted together, then the limit of individual machines (e.g., the brain, AI, and game theory) is to obtain the second person viewpoint where each piece of the universe fits optimally. Awareness (the first-person viewpoint) therefore only occurs to the game not the individual game pieces. So, the existence of animals (game pieces in evolution) provides a portal or interface through which the universe sees them as if each has agency and is fittest.

  10. Penrose half of this interwiew: "so this is <<A is not B>> " tryna explain axioms and logic of the first order
JBP: "Ah so like [derivative talk with a thousand words joining the universe not quite getting penrose point]"
    Penrose: wut?
JBP: Same derivative talk with TWO thousand words
    Penrose: dunno.

  11. Wow! Mr. Penrose was literally exasperated by Peterson's lack of knowledge. They were like talking in different rooms. He repeated a bazillion times that ”it's not like this” while Peterson was keeping blabbering his nonsensical salad of notions (I don't say ”concepts” because he seemed unable to grasp the mere idea of a concept. This is how a motivational speaker gets humiliated and destroyed by hard science. And Peterson didn't even realize he was talking too much and too chaotic, he kept on cutting Penrose and uttering and uttering his own cringe. Tbh, I have never seen such a ridiculous decapitation, ever in my life.
Still, props to Mr. Peterson for still publishing this execution.

  12. In the infinite infinitesimal unquestionable Loves intentions are to bring all things to consciousness…
Simply put it is the significance of the big and the small!!!

  13. Jordan's pivot and careful approach in treating Sir Roger with delicacy, in the goal of reaching truth, is one of his most enduring qualities. What a great interview.

  14. This is all ivory tower nonsense. Human consciousness – the awareness of being aware – lies outside the scope of physics. Consciousness has to do with the laws of life itself. There may be similarities between the laws of physics and the laws of life; but that's all they are, similarities only. Has physics ever stated what life is? I don't think so.

  15. english mr Peterson…please. i know youre smart enough to put your thoughts in terms a 5 year old could understsnd….so…please, in the interest of EFFECTIVE communication, please do.

  16. Stephen Hawking, as far as I remember was changing his mind about the theory of big bang. Farther more, he said that the world, as we know, will vanish soon within about 100 years. If it were true, what for is the knowledge of the bending space. Everything will go to rubbish anyhow. Why we are spending so much money to get into the conclusion that we are simply dumb ass wholes and we will disappear from the face of the universe sooner or later. If that, what Hawking said, will be true, there will be no trace of our civilization whatsoever. The only thing that we know for sure that even the stupidest thought that got to our mind existed in the universe, and nobody can deny that.

    😊
