What’s going on with Wave-Particle Duality? Neil deGrasse Tyson and astrophysicist Charles Liu discuss this hard-to-grasp concept, key science around it like the de Broglie Realtion and the Double Slit Experiment, and why it’s not so intuitive to everyone. Plus, why didn’t the term “wavicle” catch on?

If our brains evolved to understand the macroscopic world, can we ever truly grasp how something can be both a wave and a particle, or are we limited to describing it mathematically?

I love Neil and he has helped me so much to be interested in so many fascinating questions. That said, I really wish science communicators would move to the next level with QM. Yes, it's counterintuitive. Yes, it doesn't fit with our classical intuitions. But our current classical intuitions were also at one time profoundly counterintuitive. I really wish people would figure out a way to not stop at "it's weird", "it's counterintuitive" but would start easing us into acceptance of a new way of viewing the world. Things propagate as wave functions, there is no such "thing" as a classical particle anymore. The particle part is due to decoherence and entanglement with the environment. However you slice it, it ain't a classical particle anymore. We need to accept that so we can move on and deepen our understanding. The real mystery is deeper and not resolved. We need as many people as possible thinking about the real problems with QM, not just the "weirdness" of it. It's weird, there's just no getting around it, apart from acceptance.

Wonderfu!!!
That didn't explain anything. You're not change the way you see something, You're changing how you observe it. The object of interests remains in its form after its observed. The guy was using terrible comparisons.
Stop talking over each other
@StarTalk what if it is just wave and particle on the dimensions that we now of but it can be whatever other attributes on a higher number of dimensions? Like a shadow on a 2D world of a 3D object.
The two lines doesn't happen. You get a different interference pattern.
I agonize listening to Dr Neil sometimes . . . I wished he would not have interrupted Dr Liu so much. I really wanted to hear Dr Liu talk more about particle wave and his book but got Dr Neil's barrage of"all-over-the-place" questions and silly jokes that wasted time. . . after a few minutes I lost interest arggghhhh The questioning was too distracting for me . . . Thank you Dr Neil I loved the graphics and the information nonetheless
I believe the double slit experiment is the closest we have to truly understanding the universe, along with quantum mechanics i think we are slowly stepping towards the truth. All is one.
"No one understands quantum mechanics." (Richard Feynman)
I just realized they're using Batik which is a cultural fabric/clothing from my country. That's so cool.
Interesting how physicists have no problem with particles being massless, then have a problem with a massless ETHER. Michelson-Morley's Ether Wind experiment showed without doubt there is no physical wind, it did not show there was no massless ether, this is simple bias.
Should I call my Microwave the Microparticle?
First episode I've seen with no hatred towards white people.
Is it possible that the wave does not collapse into a particle, but by the simple act of observation, we pick a universe that we chose to step into.
I don’t think NDT understood the measurement problem
From what I've observed so far waves are made of particles therefore what we call an electron is made of much much more smaller things which we have not yet discovered, under certain conditions can spread out into a wave front entangled within itself. Just as water particles attract & expand with each other.
Why is it so short? You need to do it for 3 hours like Joe Rogan or better yet go on. Joe Rogan
I think it is not correct (around 7:40). As far you know if you don't observe them they will make points nut after many such experiments they will still make interference. Only if you put detector to check which "hole" it chose it will be more like you showed (alhough I also know similar but slightly different version here, like one wave effect instead of 2)
Oh, this is not so bad. ( I like the guest ✔️🌟)
PHILOSOPHY, THEORICALY NON ANSWER 😢
No disrespect, but some of these definitions sound more like religion than science. Don't believe what you see, believe the probability. If watching something changes its properties, how does the particle know that it is being observed? Sounds like "just have faith."
Nice try gents. A complete Failure, but nice try to explain the wave-particle duality.
Ah yes, lest we forget, the entirety of quantum physics, way back in the 1920's decided 'just don't think about it, the math works' and they've stuck with that for century.
Just saying that you think it is intuitive doesn't resolve anything. Saying that the "waveness" and "particleness" are just two aspects of an object doesn't make it any more intuitive. Neither of them actually tried to explain anything. What I heard was, "We focus on the math and try not to think about this weird stuff we cant explain." and "It's too hard to explain, so we just ignore it."
“Any fool can see the limits of seeing, but not even the wisest know the limits of knowing. Thus is ignorance rendered invisible, and are all Men made fools.”

– 'Tao Te Ching', by Lao Tzu (Chapter 1)
"The Way that can be walked is not the eternal Way.
The name that can be named is not the eternal name.
The nameless is the beginning of Heaven and Earth.
The named is the mother of all things.
Free from desire you see the mystery.
Full of desire you see the manifestations.
These two have the same origin but differ in name.
That is the secret,
The secret of secrets,
The gate to all mysteries."
Is there a connection between the growing human population and the expansion of the universe ?
Batik shirt. Nice.
If you think the double slit experiment’s crazy, check out the delayed choice experiment, it’s gets even crazier 🤯
China as the mind functions as a wave and a particle both travel to the slit / America will not win the conflict and you risk a world war 3 becoming unavoidable / Look ideal time to nuke Yellowstone and all nuclear power station in America and get it over with permanently/ as World War 3 takes place CHINA PAKISTAN NORTH KOREA RUSSIA and the final reduction of global population is achieved CNN will become just a radiactive spot for long distance experiments
I think it is the cultural difference. Asians (including me) would have generally no problem in understanding the multiple aspects for one entity.
If we go deep underground and discover a new species that has a trunk like an elephant, ears like an elephant, big like an elephant, but it has scales like a lizard and a tail like a lizard, that creature is not an elephant and a lizard at the same time. It’s something new entirely we don’t yet have a word for
"When you change looking at things , the things you look at change"
~MaxPlanck
A perfect quote in this context
There's only one possible explanation for this…. Fairy GOD PARENTS!
An air mass can have attributes of temperature and pressure. We wouldn't use a barometer to measure temperature nor a thermometer to measure pressure. You wouldn't use a double slit to look for the path of a wave if determining the path of a particle. Use the slit path to see its particle properties use the any path through slit to see its wave properties.
Show me one single video of the two slit experiment working as particle I dare you
✨️💫✨️💫✨️
It's actually staggeringly simple and intuitive. The wave is the propagating interactions potential, we call the measured boundary interaction a particle. That's it. We are still deeply conceptually confused
Neil, I finally understand quantum physics, it's like, when ya shoes are both "worn in" and "worn out" at the same time? It's an illusion?
The all lives within the all.. the more you know the more you don’t know is only true if you worship knowledge and ignore wisdom
The particle is always accompanied by a self scanning, standing wave, where most of the information concerning the geometrical properties of the particle is contained. This wave is called a matter wave, and can be mathematically described by a wave function. Each time the wave function collapses or we have a state vector reduction, the point-like state of that particle is defined in spacetime, as required by spacetime laws. This process is known as quantum decoherence, and works through wave superposition. The particle existing in a point-like state only at the now moment. Which is why it vibrates.
At the quantum level, motion occurs in a similar way it is created on a TV screen. As you may know, a TV screen refreshes 60 times per second or so, that is how motion is created. Imagine the fundamental particle as a vibrating 3D system refreshing its structure over a trillion times per second (Planck time). A standing, self-scanning, spherical wave with a point-like particle at the center. [Motion and time may seem like illusions, but the process that is reality is certainly not. Now, quickly rolling a film in front of the lens inside a movie projector in order to produce a motion picture… that is an illusion!]
So, each time there is a wave packet collapse, the now state of the particle is defined. Then and only then, can the particle materialize into spacetime, where the laws of Thermodynamics and Relativity apply. Without the information required for the wave packet to collapse, there can be no particle in spacetime; it may exist virtually, but not in spacetime.
