Basic Disk: MBR vs GPT | Disk Management in Windows 10 – Create Partition

In this video, we will create multiple partitions using Disk Management window, and we will talk about the differences between Primary partition vs Extended partition in Basic Disk using MBR vs GPT. We used Disk Management window in Windows 10 Virtual Machine using VirtualBox.

In Windows 10, when we use disk management to create partitions, we have the option to use MBR or GPT for our Partition Style. MBR is older, and we can have partition size of up to 2 TB. GPT Partition Style is newer, and we can have partition size of up to 64 TB. In Windows 10, Disk Management will automatically create extended partition on the forth partition when we are using MBR Basic Disk. We can use disk part or 3rd party programs, if we want to use 4 Primary partitions.

The Primary Partitions can be as an active partition, which we can install O.S on Primary Partitions, and they can be boot able.

The Extended Partition is just a place holder for the logical drives. Inside Extended Partition, we can have multiple logical drives, and we can not install O.S on logical drives.

In Dynamic Disk, we can create volumes, and regardless of whether the dynamic disks on a system use the MBR or GPT partition style, we can create up to 2,000 dynamic volumes on a system, although the recommended number of dynamic volumes is 32 or less.
