BBC The Atheism Tapes – Daniel Dennett

Daniel Dennett expounds on his famous theory of Skyhooks & Cranes — the competing miraculous and rational explanations of phenomena — and discusses the extent to which people need “magic” in their lives.

The Atheism Tapes is a 2004 BBC television documentary series presented by Jonathan Miller. The material that makes up the series was originally filmed in 2003 for another, more general series, Atheism: A Rough History of Disbelief, but was too lengthy for inclusion. Instead, the BBC agreed to create The Atheism Tapes as a supplementary series of six programmes, each consisting of an extended interview with one contributor.

  1. Great interview, giving some good wordings to issues like soul/mind etc. We have a soul but it is composed by millions of robots, it does the job of a soul, but in a mechanical way…

  2. Creating amino acids  and RNA in the lab and saying it proves abiogenesis is like someone saying the complete works of Shakespeare arose from naturalistic processes by pointing to a bowl of alphabet soup!

  3. What is this?? I have seen nothing and have no experiences and that's why i prove you know something by having an long beard and glasses?

I mean let's look at that millions and millions of people that had an near death experience and see what is the evidence that they are true or not.. and beliiieve me there are so much evidences that prove that even..

who is he taking the faith of others away by seeing nothing?
This is NOT evidence at all..

once in my life i was atheist too.. but I REALLY DON'T WANT TO MAKE BELIEVERS NON-BELIEVERS..
what Mr. Ego-IQ If your life is over and you will see your gardian angel.. what will you say him ? What was your work? Against god ? Why ? Is there any evidence for you? If not.. why you fool others…
    you all believe him..
    you make a mistake..

and yeah for sure.. religious people make war.. not people who send them ALL the weapons and want the oil of the world and the world under their total control…

  4. Almost speechless, if you don't feel emotions or some type of way 10 minutes into this video (and you're an adult) then you are mentally and therefore morally dead. #philosophycancrushyou #rebuildyou #evolution #DarwinismRead further for a shot stronger than any coffee you've ever had.*
My face was almost exactly like Jonathan's, I cannot for a minute doubt its validity, every single step was there. I think I might be qualified already to assert that this is a proof (or sketch of a proof), honestly speaking as a mathematician who crafts logical arguments for a living. Seriously.. But it's like I can't say I didn't see it coming in some way, just what happens when you think about these things a lot and with enough weapons in your mental toolbox.#Dennet draws the comparison between the #Darwinian #revolution and say, the #Einstein or #Newtonian revolutions. The #knowledge is virtually the same, you believe in gravity, because you are an adult. This is exactly the same. Dennet comments that the the "implications" from Darwinism and gravity are different in the sense that one is almost immediately obvious and the other one not. I don't even have to tell you which one I'm talking about. Dennet in another video says that he asked something similar at a physics conference, if you really understood what E=mc^2 meant, and all the hands went up. Eventually one theoretical physicist yells that in fact only theoreticians really understand, the experimentalists and just "engines" to check, proving Dennet's point. I fortunately do have a working understanding of #mathematics and theoretical physics, but I understand not everyone does. But you don't need that machinery to understand the real implications of evolution. I've been talking to my friend Eins Null about this, how mathematics #UNDERSTANDING is like a 6th sense, think about it. Not a particular #theorem or technique or even a fact, but mathematical #reasoning itself. I guess I'm just advertising mathematics and logic right now, but I see it as pertinent. Maybe if you don't understand Dennet or myself then that's what your missing, or otherwise this argument should be perfectly clear to you. I know I'm not preaching to the quire here (or I can't think of anything else..). They even talk about the moral implications of the #dangerous knowledge, and as an adult I guess I'm just ready to share it. (thanks #facebook for making it easier to share this, I thought about YouTube to thank but it's really the #internet)
Which is a lot more physics. That's something I really don't fully understand how it works though, but you can't doubt it works, the Internet. Although I'm aware of most of the theoretical background needed for computer science, didn't get too deep into engineering to actually understand how to make one, but I can say that I know the idea behind it, understating computers by programs/programming and Turing machines. It's computation, which I'm very good at, and I do it theoretically/abstractly everyday. Just like you don't question this object in front of you, you cannot question evolution, if you don't fully understand evolution, then this video is a rough sketch and its implications in one, saves you the thinking, if you understand arguments and proof, which is the prerequisite of #science.Shit is real. It's like breaking out of the matrix.  Just like they say in the video, I really don't know if everybody is ready for this, as a society!  I think I made the adult decision to share this with you. CM

  5. +Tom Bayley let me just clarify what you're saying here… so you think any kind of explanation inherently cannot completely explain(or is this part satisfy) the thing it's trying to explain. and you think satisfaction is the point at which we realize the former point. correct?

  6. there is no mind it is a human word to describe trillions of processes between the body and brain the same way a movie play on the screen from the player and the disc yet is not the screen or the disc ot the player. consciousness emerges through trillions of processes

  7. it was after both my parents died tragically that i became an atheist because reality could not be denied i was a death denier and reality forced its truth into my experience of suffering

  8. ideas should be challenged not respected if the ideas are false and harmful ways of thinking in the brain that lead to abhorrence or human death denial . human themselves should be respected and should not be forced at gun point to listen why their god is fake they can walk away of close their ears run

  9. if we ridicule the ideas now they will disappear most belive it cause they brainwashed since birth and thye dont really belive it anyway but its cool to believe in god and christians are the "good guy" in culture defined beliefs

  10. Being more successful does not imply having more kids. Example, Japan. Daniel means well, but often he generalizes. I guess the assertion holds true statistically, and this is perhaps in the sense that it can be used to explain evolution.

  11. An immaterial spirit is physically impossible , sorry. No life after death, no god, no soul, no daemon, no ghost.
What is "real" doesn't need any proof to be.
Is there a debate about the existence of dogs?
