It would be an interesting exercise to undertake, to find out what percentage of the laudatory commenters on videos such as this ("This man is brilliant," "… This guy has the best arguments for X…", "… If only people who held view Y could see this, they'd find themselves refuted…", etc.) could actually demonstrate an understanding of the view that they take themselves to be piling on. They never seem to. But perhaps that's just a confirmation bias.
Arguing that the origin of morality "goes back to the greek," completely ignores the fact that many human communities historically and geographically have been separated by the "greek" ideals and, yet, have morality. For someone who works as an evolutionary psychologist, this argument is totally non-evolutionary. Morality is an emerging capacity of organisms thanks to evolution, and it's present even in our cousins, apes.
Several aspects of his theories of mind and language are as nonsensical as this one of morality.
As a free thinker and a fellow atheist trying to bring some understanding of this vast universe, I cannot agree with most of the (pardon my french) bs this pop-star figure of the scientific community says.
Sadly, many believe in him because of his, recognizable, talent to hypnotize with oratory.
I think that he states some valid shortcomings inherent in religion. However, to truly understand and map out the complete underpinnings of existence is more than anyone is capable of accomplishing. To state that there is no God — by that I mean creator — is plausible to many people but the caveat is that no one knows for sure. We have believers and nonbelievers and that's about it. Perhaps we should stop beating each other up over this and allow people to live with their own thoughts and ideas.
I never quite know what this guy is talking about, though it sounds impressive…
The more I listen to this fellow, the more I like. I'm at risk of turning into a fanboy.
Where is part 2?
Many thanks my friend.. From an ex Muslim materialist.
If only there were even 10% more people like Stephen Pinker in the world then we'd have a far more sane planet.
7:30 Weird. My eyebrows go down when I shrug.
Sounds like Lester Nygaard
I met him once. He's fucking awesome.
ass
I'm a fan of him. It's kind of awkward, but there's nothing that could be done about it. Pure genius!
One of my favorites. I love his lectures but I haven't seen very many debates ( other than the Origins talk) with him which I think would be fun. If anyone can point me in the direction of a few more I would be grateful. I know he has some detractors, Chomsky comes to mind. He is just so pleasant that he may not be suited for adversarial Harvard style debates. I also think that Joseph Campbell in "The Power of Myth" goes along way in understanding the necessity of religion in the history of organizing early societies. He has a lot to say about moving from those myths per se into a better understanding of anthropology and the correct arguments in transforming the "stories" to their underlying meaning and how they are quintessential to human psychology rather than just calling the actual beliefs stupid (which they are).
Romans 1:22 "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools."
Psalm 53:1 "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good."
This is the smartest man living on Earth! I've got intelligence overdose after watching it!
I realised that whenever I visit YouTube I divide time between Steven Pinker, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins and a few others! Kind of behaving as a fanboy in my choice of videos! Truly embarrassing, but I also feel privileged to learn from these guys…
He looks like poodle dog.
Thanks for this compilation. Pinker is amongst the greatest intellectuals to have graced this planet.
"also abolished in this period…"No, Sir. There are many cultures which did not abolished these sadistic punishments and keep them practiced even today. We all know which culture this is.
Slavery may be illegal everywhere on Earth but NGO's estimate there are 25-45 Million humans held in a state of slavery.
Wow, Bilbo Baggins is a genius

Pinker has the brain power of a carrot. Who cares what this idiot has to say? He's all wind and ego, and wouldn't know the truth if it bit him on the bum. He thinks truth is whatever comes out of his little mind, but he's blinded by his own ego, and never really stops to think he might be writing. He confuses argument with fact,, and truth with cleverness. He's a silly, silly little man with a bad hairstyle.
This is like watching woody Allan describe paint drying while seemingly slightly put off about doing it.
Elightmen and morality?? Jajajajajaja yeah and Lenin later…
Darwinism- NAHUM 3:9 it was boundless, for Put and Lubim were your helpers.
For Joel'3:8 is called "homosapiens", and in the hand of the people of Judah, one shall take a proverb against 2 :4 Micah.
(( Thank You.))
man's mind, in the universe, is smaller than an ant's big toe. He would know how the universe was created?
Not true in Middle East.
Talmudic Disputation 🙂
Religious people don't have shit on Pinker, after all most of them are retarded.
Anyone else find this guys voice and the way he talks to be very ASMR triggering?
