Steps towards learning Automation – 03
——————————————————————
In this episode, we will understand the concept of sourcing and sinking.

One of the important things to consider while purchasing the digital input out modules of a programmable logic controller (PLC) from an automation company is the type of the module required. The module can be a sinking type or a sourcing type. This video explains the basic concept of sourcing and sinking. Before directly explaining the concept with the I/O modules of a PLC, we start our video by understanding a basic circuit of a switch and a lamp in series with a power supply. It is easier to understand the concept with this circuit visually. Once the concept of sourcing and sinking is established, we move forward to understanding it with respect to digital input output module of a programmable controller. In industrial automation, various kinds of sensors and transducers are used in the field or a plant to gather data about a process. These sensors or transducers can be either a sourcing type device or a sinking type device. With proper selection of these sensors, transducers we can select the required I/O modules. Our concept of sinking and sourcing will help to easily select the required components for automation. Today, factory automation technology has advanced to a great level. Many different components and automation products are available from different vendors. Their proper selection for a specific process is the role of an automation and purchase engineer.

When current finally enters the component, it is said that the component is of sinking type. Similarly, when current emerges from the component, the component is of sourcing type. Now depending whether the sensor outputs the current or sinks the current, the corresponding input card of a PLC should sink a current or source it respectively. Hope you enjoy the video.
