Filmed at the Royal Geographical Society on 22nd May 2013.

Daniel Dennett is one of the world’s most original and provocative thinkers. A philosopher and cognitive scientist, he is known as one of the ‘Four Horseman of New Atheism’ along with Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and the late Christopher Hitchens.

On May 22nd he came to Intelligence Squared to share the insights he has acquired over his 40-year career into the nature of how we think, decide and act. Dennett revealed his favourite thinking tools, or ‘intuition pumps’, that he and others have developed for addressing life’s most fundamental questions. As well as taking a fresh look at familiar moves — Occam’s Razor, reductio ad absurdum — he discussed new cognitive solutions designed for the most treacherous subject matter: evolution, meaning, consciousness and free will.

By acquiring these tools and learning to use them wisely, we can all aspire to better understand the world around us and our place in it.

  1. Fuck yes! I'm slightly below average IQ and I've been arguing this for some time now. I've been calling it, externalizing intelligence. A more intelligent person can reason a set of tools that a less intelligent person can utilize to become more intelligent. This set of intelligence tools can be central to our education, if we don't learn them, we're voluntarily forsaking intelligence we have access too.

  2. My IQ is dropping listening to this blather. Perhaps we've gotten smarter but our public intellectuals have definitely gotten dumber. 17 minutes in and calling out the word "surely" is the biggest news. If one doesn't already know "Surely" is nothing but cheap excuse for whatever follows it as well as a defensive way of saying "end of story" then one is probably not going to learn that here. I hope the audience at least got a chicken dinner or something in exchange for their attendance.

  3. Surely you should always put a question mark on the end of sentences beginning 'surely'? Then it's not an assertion. The most dubious assertions end with an exclamation mark! Except that one of course.

  4. Daniel Dennett would be more interesting and useful without this fixation on god or not god… Intelligent, but far from free of bias, which surfaces at various points in his speech.

People trying to create an elevated position for themselves, where they get to explain to others what reality is, in exchange for free food and shekels. We're just having a new generation of bullshitters wanting to get rid of the last generation of bullshitters…

So long as Catholics In Action let you live, they must consider you useful exhaust people's energies in pointless debates… But in general, they don't like people trying to cut in on their business model…

Most of the atheist logic abusers seem mainly mad at religions, with which any possible god would have nothing to do with. Their first fallacy: They consider god and religion as one and the same. That's like saying a car and its exhaust are one and the same.

At any rate, religion has been asinine enough to give rise to the synagogue-of-satan earth is now saddled with. What the hell, people! Are you nuts? So you don't like the god from your bible, and your idea of rebellion is to pick the bad guy from the same book that managed to upset you? How about just fetching a different book from the shelf?!?

And yet other people spend all their time arguing against the existence of god… Uhh, why spend your life arguing about something you believe doesn't exist? Because everybody MUST be brought to believe/disbelieve the same thing? That's what its all about, no? Sounds at most like Church 1.01, not even 2.0… :p

And complaining about past religions, while we're already being oppressed by the current religion of capitalism is so out of touch!

Only the first remark here directly relates to Mr. Dennet. The rest is just a rant about the endless, tedious god-or-no-god stupidity…

  5. I find your condescension towards autism worthy of condescension towards your. Normal you are not and you will not mistake expected or familiar with normal any more. It is easier to say Autism is an example of evolutionary advancement than a mal or dys function.

  6. Interesting tidbit about the Anatomy of Violence paper that links psychopaths with temp workers!

Regarding the 42m mark where it's mentioned that glial cells outnumber neurons 10:1, there was a great Scientific American post in June 13, 2012 that suggests it's much closer to 1:1.

There was also a great debate between Dan and Sam Harris entitled 'Free Will Revisited'!

  7. @~87:00 – So true, people have an epistemological block between their preconceived images, informed and relatively uninformed, of their worlds that it's a herculean effort to change their opinions even with sound argument, whereas any feather of a support for those images forms a steadfast justification of what people always knew was the truth. It's true of the smart and the simple. I see it as a major blockade inhibiting the advancement of human intellect. And don't try to tell me otherwise. 😛

  8. America will soon be destroyed.

One Sunday morning in June, 1933, God gave seven major continuous visions to His prophet William Marrion Branham (Fulfilling Malachi 4:5 + Matthew 17:11 + Revelation 10:7 and other scriptures)

Five of the seven continuous visions, have already come to pass.

    THE SEVENTH VISION.
“The last and seventh vision was wherein I heard a most terrible explosion. As I turned to look I saw nothing but debris, craters, and smoke all over the land of America.”

America will soon be destroyed !!!

The, “Elijah anointing,” (Concerning the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ) is used “TWICE.”

The first time 2,000 years ago, when God sent John the Baptist, then again in this day.

At each, “Coming of the Lord,” there is an Elijah prophet who precedes that, “Coming.”

Jesus said concerning John the Baptist.
    Matthew 3:3.
For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Elijah, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

John, “Prepared the way for the Lord,” John did NOT “Restore anything,” as that which would need to be restored, (The full understanding of the whole Bible,) had not yet been given.

This scripture concerns the Elijah prophet for, “THIS DAY.”
    Matthew 17:11.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elijah truly shall FIRST COME, and RESTORE all things.

God has fulfilled the above scripture in THIS DAY.

This scripture also predicts the Elijah prophet for “This day”…..
    Malachi 4:5.
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

This Elijah prophet comes just before, “The coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord,” which happens in this day.

We are now living in the last days, God has kept His word and sent that prophet, thereby “Restoring” His word to His Bride.

God has raised the dead on FIVE occasions through His chosen vessel.

God was photographed SIX times, (Veiled in the form of the Pillar of Fire) with His prophet.

God`s chosen vessel was William Marrion Branham.

Check out William Branham, God`s “Vindicated Prophet” for the End Time.

God raised the dead FIVE times through this ministry.

The GREAT PILLAR OF FIRE was photographed SIX times with His Prophet.

One “True Prophet” when there are many “False Prophets.”

These and other “Prophetical scriptures” fulfilled:

    Malachi 4:5.
    Matthew 17:11.
    Revelation 10:7.
    Revelation 3:14.
    Revelation 1:16 – 20.
    Revelation 2:1.
    Revelation 3:1.

  9. (Heart vs Mind) What is the absolute truth causality (Cause and Effect circle) of Love as your (valid) Human Nature pattern (to facilitate an exponential offset for global peace)?
As a result, When there is a positive correlation between two variables (Hope and Love), as the value of one variable increases (Hope) 1st, the value of the other variable (Love) 2nd also increases to inevitably result in the limitless state of Happiness as 3rd.
    Selflessly,
Ps. If we want the best/limitless for ourselves then, we should treat others the same. The infinite applicability of Hope and Love as constant variables always results to cause the effect of the third variable best understood as the moderator/Happiness. What we fail to understand is that we can easily discern validity; if the behaviour forms the selfless circle shape of Love versus the linear/self only directed shape of/as (selfish) Greed. If the absolute truth causes Happiness to always exist then, can we know/choose to continually live for peace at any level (micro to macro) without a valid understanding of self (Human Nature Pattern)?

  10. I don't see how the neurosurgeon took away his free will. She didn't affect him more than any number of other environmental factors.

  11. I have more objections to the "OCD microchip" than I would to an artificial intelligence Chinese room, if they can build such a computer without borrowing any physical bits of men. I enjoy listening to Dennett's well structured speeches, but the field he works in, analyzing human minds into their parts and intruding into brains is disturbing.

  12. 25:50 – *I think this shows that Daniel Dennett just can't get over having been destroyed in his argument regarding free will with Sam Harris. Here he portrays a person having been told by a neuroscientist that he does not have free will, who subsequently becomes irresponsible and agressive and ends up committing a crime, and his defence is, "I have no free will, You cannot hold me responsible"
You're right, or rather, you would be, if there was a *me , But thats exactly the point, we are not holding You responsible, rather, we are holding your pattern of cause and effect related behaviour responsible, since your past behaviours are in many ways an indicator of your future behaviours.*

We don't think there is a You in there to be held responsible for anything

  13. This guy likes being on a stage and loves the sound of his own voice. I have a simple question for him , which came first , the chicken or the egg ? All your brain tools cannot answer that question.

  14. 31:13 ?? Wrong
"There is no difference between determinism and undeterminism…"
    Nonsense!
What are opportunities if not things you made happen?
That's the power of consciousness and "Law of attraction".

This (old) man [ one of the Four Horseman of New Atheism ] is fooling you. It's goal: decieve you and make you thing that even if you have free will you are incapable to manifest your goals. That's an endoctrination. His goal is to make you think you are insignificant, meaningless…

These peolpe don't want you to better understand your life (which only meditation can provide you) but want you to give up and think the world as something very complex, so complex that you'd better don't think to much about it (and let them create false belief for you to take for truth).

Forget all from this man. Be sure you have a great power, the power of thinking because thoughts act on matter, circumstances and life.

    Have a nice day.
