Design Theory: Visual Library

Sinix Design

In this video series, I ponder the theoretical side of design to determine the best methods for creating things that are appealing and unique. I’ll deal with all aspects of the idea creating process and share potential tricks and tips that will make it easier for you.

Episode 3 is about the Visual Library. The individual collection of stored visual data that we all have. I discuss how to utilize it properly and cultivate it.

  1. Really nice content. I am glad that you kept up the good job since 4 years ago.
I do not know if you still answer the comments on these older posts but I will just ask away; what do you exactly mean when you practice an artist's art? Do you mean a sort of analysing or just copying or…?

  2. I just started watching your videos and I love them! 🙂 You're very detailed but concise and direct, it doesn't take 2 hours to understand what you're saying!

  3. Hey Sinix! So taking photos of the environment (clouds, trees etc) will help with the soft aspect of my visual library if I'm aiming to be an environmental illustrator right? I keep taking pictures of cloud formations sometimes while noting how the sun reflects off of them!

  4. Maybe I just don’t have what it takes… I study and study and fill my visual library and I’m not improving I have been trying to become a great artist for years… I’m just not going anywhere with it. Should I just stop, instead of turning my wheels in the mud and being stuck in this art rut

  5. Can a person with aphantasia every hope to have a visual library I find my aphantasia is getting in the way of me becoming a great artist I can’t store any visuals or recreate visuals and I have reached a point of stagnation in my art ability

  6. This is partly why I want to pickup art / visual design. It's highly interesting to me on its own but I also see it as an invaluable tool for improving my game designs. In the most literal sense of creating better visual worlds / interfaces but also in the more abstract creative sense. Expanding my conceptual design muscles will likely help immensely when it comes to abstract thinking and coming up with new creative ideas.

I also really like the thought of coming up with stronger aesthetics and vibes to give my games more character. I feel that pursuing art would help immensely.

  7. I've heard creativity related to breathing. If you try to exhale (create) constantly you'll pass out. You have to inhale every once in a while.

  8. i get stressed very easily but whenever i see your videos, its like watching in a childhood home on a tube tv idk its warm and pleasant.

  9. I struggle a lot with my visual library. My brain, the conscious part at least, has aphantasia. I don't see any images in my brain, I can't retain or recall anything beyond a very fleeting or blurry idea, even important things. It's extra frustrating when it comes to my art as I am very good at drawing from life and reference, but can't really create anything from pure imagination. However I've generally found that if I draw something from reference enough, I can retain it. If I consume enough of a kind of art or style, I will sometimes dream derivative images that I try to jot down, and in general I will "understand" the structures of those images more.

  10. Thanks man for doing this series but I think I need more information and theorys about desgin
If you don't mind Can you recommend me few books that talk more about desgin

  11. Wow, this is my lucky day! Kenzie at LLD hipped me to your channel and I feel so fortunate. Sinix, your channel is a revelation! I am a jazz musician, totally new to drawing but an avid Art lover. Since COVID lock down I have dived into my dream to draw. I can’t thank you enough for all the valuable information and support you give in each episode (which I’ve been bingeing on all morning!) This is just TERRIFIC stuff! Thank you for all you do!

  12. I'm commenting on this video..
And I'm gonna come back after one year…
In that i apply all these knowledge…
And see how my visual library changed…

  13. This is my first video from you and i commend you dearly for bot only articulating the tenants of visual design most amateur artists are struggling with but also in relating specific ways of implementing a balance between a masterful grasp of the fundamentals, plus a good harvest of intellectual flexibility ( i see you there with the Gravity's rainbow book to which i think most your viewers probably overlooked) would greatly increase one's visual library, and to which i myself am doing my best to do so hopefully comparable to, but not exactly as crazy as, kim jung gi. What a Great video!

  14. You keep saying "Do studies" and while I understand what they are, I never really understand how to even really begin doing a study and what it all entails.
