Does the universe actually need an observer to exist?
Quantum mechanics gives us a strange problem. At the quantum level, a system can be described as existing in a superposition of possible states, while measurements give us definite outcomes.
So what exactly counts as a measurement?
And does something have to observe the universe for reality to become definite?
Some historical interpretations of quantum mechanics gave consciousness a special role in the measurement process. Physicists such as John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner explored ideas in which the observer could play a fundamental part in quantum measurement.
But that does not mean modern physics has established that human consciousness creates reality.
Most mainstream approaches to quantum mechanics do not give conscious observers any special physical role. Decoherence, interactions between physical systems, and different interpretations of quantum mechanics offer other ways of understanding what happens during measurement.
Yet the deeper question remains.
If the entire universe is the system being described, there is no outside observer standing beyond it.
So what does it even mean to say that the universe is being observed?
Maybe the universe exists perfectly well without anyone watching.
Or perhaps the word “observer” in quantum mechanics never meant a conscious mind in the first place.
We still do not have a universally accepted answer to what quantum mechanics ultimately says about reality.
And that may be the most unsettling part.

An observer is not just a conscious being. Anything that collapses the wavefunction is an observer.
Isn't this the whole thing with the Observer effect in quantum physics?
That there are no particles until someone Observs and then the waves becomes particles?
