Donald Hoffman | The Case Against Reality

Donald Hoffman: Donald Hoffman is an American cognitive psychologist at the University of California, Irvine. His forthcoming book, ‘The Case Against Reality’, argues that perception doesn’t present things as they are but instead acts like a desktop interface enabling us to interact with the world.

  1. Awesome interview! What a beautiful setting too! I couldn't help but notice the guy in the background enjoying himself jumping in the water and swimming. Who ever designed this game of reality did a superb job! Perhaps we all need to just jump in the water and have fun like this background interface guy, sometimes. Just taste the vanilla rather than talking about whether it's real or not. Still, love this scientist's views of this world and his humbleness!

  2. 1 objection, reality isnt evolved, our world created with symbols, not see directly reality…so chemistry, biology etc help to see behind symbols….reunderstant reality with reverse engineering so called science!

  3. EXEMPLE:
    Nexus Comunity Mods Skyrim
    Imersive Hud
HUD when you need it. HIDE when you don't.
Press X for on/off (we just dont know where is that button..)

  4. Great interview whoever the interviewer was. As other folks have commented, longer interviews with DH were less insightful.
I see (render) an apple, look away and it disappears and then I look back later and the apple is there (rendered) again. If it were an ice cube not an apple, when I do the same thing when I look again I dont render an ice cube but a pool of water🧐 why?
Also when he says “suppose I have a visualisation tool ……. our headset”. What and where is this visualisation tool within my network of CAs? It’s not my brain as this is only an icon.

  5. But how can you be confident that natural selection drives truthful perception to extinction if you have no clue as to what nature is?

  6. If one is to study a wave, it is a spiral, if a wave is a spiral, it can only go in one direction, if it only goes in one direction (osmosis) then waves like sound or colour, literally screw into our brain in one direction, to interfere with this ‘frequency’, the cancellation is possible for the duration of another frequency interference.

  7. How can we talk about reality when we haven't even got there.
Who knows for true, that you are thinking on your own and not using the thoughts from someone else who took part in educating you. Not being aware of this condition, that you were influenced with informations from birth on, is not being aware of what you are saying to be correct. From a false perspective I will have false interpretations of my thoughts.
It's like, a blind man depending on others to tell him how his world's surrounding looks like and everything else he cannot see. The picture he than constructs of his surroundings may be false depending on his understanding.
The confusion that has come up because of the many discoveries in short periods, that are arbitrarily set together, have created varieties of theories about reality, consciousness, brain functions and spirituality.
But I think, we have to get to the roots of our being, with a clear mind, to fully concentrate of what is not being deceived from outer influence, and to have a healthy perception of the here and now.
Our brain potentials are not yet exhausted, why wrestle with imaginary thoughts that may be samples for development and construction?
We know that the brains capacity goes way over its limits when its challenged. The brain conducts, the motoric allows a person with no arms to use their foot , mouth, in exchange for the missing arm to do the duties in a astonishing skilled way.
The heart brain function is also observable in relation with emotions.
If engineers would try to explain to us, a car wouldn't exist without all the screws in it, they might be right in one way if we look at the car in pieces, but the screws and all other parts must exist to have it made a car.
Reality will only be real to us, when we see it with our own eyes, and not through a setup lens held by someone else.

  8. I’m kinda wanna agree with him but on the other side.. that’s the reason why we hear sound instead of seeing soundwaves right ? So it’s al made up easier for us to intercept and interact with it.. but I wanna believe that we’re in a simulation..

  9. Haven't read the book but I'm curious to know how Hoffman can base his theory that humans are incapable of perceiving reality accurately on evolution, which is a theory based heavily on experiments, which is a valid method only if you work from the presumption that humans are capable of perceiving reality fairly accurately. Maybe I missed something.

  10. He didn't touch the point if evolution is the process with a certain goal, there must be the lead process engineer who created this process and updates it periodically, and some number of process engineers and operators who control and maintain it. And the General Manager, of course, who has combined all of them in a team and assigned them roles. So, no matter how vaste the society of scientists is they cannot win religion in this eternal disput of existence of the creator and the bunch of holly creatures 🙂 they just will reach the same point by the much longer way 🙂 However, maybe going this way they will be able to find the reason of human's existence 🤔 🙂

  11. Does the sun create the photons, or does photons create the sun……?!

The answer to this question its obvious, and the answer concludes the question about objective reality versus virtual reality

    quite easy……

  12. Who noticed the swimming guy at 32:19 and was he NAKED? 2nd time I've watched this video and never noticed it the first time. What does that say about the nature of reality …

  13. Two Indian sages have figured it out, Sri ramana maharashi and Sri nisgadartta Maharaj. The universe depends on consciousness and not vice versa, this can be experienced through self inquiry/meditation. Everything appears and disappears in brahman (consciousness)
