Donald Hoffman – What is Consciousness?

Closer To Truth

Consciousness is what we can know best and explain least. It is the inner subjective experience of what it feels like to see red or smell garlic or hear Beethoven. Consciousness has intrigued and baffled philosophers. To begin, we must define and describe consciousness. What to include in a complete definition and description of consciousness?

  1. So what is consciousness supposed to be, if not a word that defines something that is there but can't be defined in any other way?

  2. Why is it so surprising that radically different properties can emerge in complex systems which don't appear at all like their base components. The universe is full of qualities like this… I think Donald is underestimating the importance of emergence. The way this 10 minute video of an apparent person appears to me from an emergence of binary data is a display of the immense power of emergence to create qualitatively different things from the base components.
Also – that we have yet to figure out consciousness is not evidence of anything beyond a failure of the human intellect. It certainly doesn't imply a non-physical answer. Granted – it's good that someone is looking at non-physical answers but we should not give them plausibility Humanity being unable to decode the complex neurology of our brain is not evidential of anything.

  3. Einstein understood all this before these men were born:

"Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the universe – a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we, with our modest powers, must feel humbled."

But then Einstein didn't shackle himself to the space/time, body/mind prison cell most ignorant/arrogant "scientists" do. Einstein liked Spinoza's conception of God. It's the way to understanding consciousness because it IS consciousness. It seems the more these scientists find out, the further away from the truth they get. It makes tenure a bad public investment when flogging deceased horses is the main activity.

  4. Simply Brilliant. Thank you Dr. Hoffman for being the science we needed to prove consciousness does exist, and is not contingent upon reality. Wow I AM so happy to finally see the math and science of what I’ve always felt to be true.

  5. It seems that the definition of consciousness is what there needs to be figured out in the parameters of consciousness need to be enumerated in order to then be able to proceed with the whole of what he's talking about. Taxation is extortion (theft/ non-consensual). Thereby, makes all governments slavery.

  6. I think a good question to end on would be…. how, if Donald’s theory is even partially valid, would this change our understanding of the origin of matter?

  7. Silence is the language of god~ Rumi.

The "I am" is true all else is inference ~ nisargadatta

Reality can only be described in negations……. Not this Not that (neti, neti) ~ vedantic mantra

Reality is beyond the mind ~ me

  8. Consciousness is a metaphysical state.

Most scientists think of human existence as a purely material reality and this is designed by luciferians to ensure the masses never know their spiritual origin.

luciferians control the material world so Hmmmm what if there are no homosapiens to act as slaves to lucifer and be consume by Bread & Circuses

  9. People too stupid from trying to be smart. people learning consciousness and trying to know it from brain and material eqiupment is like a guy trying to date a pretty girl by trying to learn what happens in the brain and the chemical reactions and then would somehow find how he would approach the girl and make her fall in love with him.

Seriously. Evolution even mentioned baffled me when you learn that consciousness is surpasses matter and time yet you still believe darwin and being as supreme as Man is comes from other life forms over million years. It really baffles me. when people ignore the reality and based on assumption about the past which they did not witness built a house of course on sand.

Illuminati is behind or satan is behind why people shouldnt know the real truth about life. while its right here before our eyes.

  10. Consciousness (summary)

    Important:

The text was written in Spanish and translated with the Google translator. I mention it for the reader's consideration.

While this is a summary, it should be enough to clarify what Consciousness is. There are many interesting subjects, related to the topic, that are not included. I have no problem answering any questions you may have.

The material body is situated in a material environment, and carries out actions. The senses capture information from the material medium. This information activates memories in the brain, groups of neurons that store information about the individual's life history. Through this process, the information from the medium, which is captured by the senses, acquires Meaning. From this same process the Expectations of Action (Pavlov) arise.

As described, the brain manages information from the Present, the Past and an eventual future. It is reasonable to assume that the brain makes a distinction between the information it manages from the Past, Present and Future.

In the brain there are no tables, skies or trees. In the brain there is information that represents tables, skies and trees.

It is reasonable to assume that the brain administers a Mental Correlation of the Relevant Environment of the Individual, which represents what is happening, in the Present, in its relevant environment. The mental correlate of the relevant environment can be called The Reality of the Individual.

Emotions and feelings accompany every life experience, and are represented in the life experience that the brain stores. Emotions and feelings give meaning to what is perceived.

Various factors determine the time that neurons remain activated.

If by turning my head to the right I stop seeing what is happening to my left, that does not mean that what I stopped perceiving a moment ago is no longer part of the mental correlate of my relevant environment. The brain has the ability to project, in time, the state of said segment of the environment; is what Pavlov observed. If in the previous example, before turning my head to the right, I observed that my dog, some hundred meters away, was running towards me, my brain will project such an event in time. Although, as the seconds pass, such a projection will become more and more diffuse, less certain, less representative of what is happening in the material world, that does not mean that my dog will no longer be represented in a certain segment of the mental correlate of my relevant medium. It is evident that this "Actualization of the Present" is due to the brain's ability to project future states of the environment. At the same time it is clear that, in the Actualization of the Present, which arises as a consequence of the Projection of the Future, a certain degree of uncertainty is implicit. By the way, the Projection of the Future is related to expectations.

The conditions of an ever-changing environment result in the expectations that the brain previously diagrammed to face what is coming are met only to a variable degree. The Projection of the Future is constantly being updated by the brain.

In the life experience that my dog has been storing in his brain, there are "latent", as non-active memories, the biographies of countless Entities with which my dog has interacted throughout his life. His life experience, in which said entities have participated, through his daily life of him, has characterized these entities, generating in his brain a kind of utilitarian biography of each one of them.

The vast experience of my dog's life, in which I have participated, allows him to carry out, when I get home and he perceives me, a fairly accurate reading of my state of mind, which determines his actions. Indeed, when I get home, a glance is enough for him to see that I am grumpy. Then he ducks his ears and lays on the floor, his gaze fixed on me. If I'm in good spirits when I open the door, he pounces on me as soon as he sees me. His brain, according to what he perceives, activates convenient memories, which allude to information with meaning contained in the biography that he possesses of me, generating expectations of action.

We can affirm, metaphorically, that an entity "dwells" in a dog's brain that represents, as a unit, both the dog's body and the dog's interests. We will call this entity, which is represented in the brain, that is, it "dwells" in the dog's brain. By the way, using similar criteria we can affirm that a “monkey entity” lives in the human brain, or that “the monkey that inhabits us” is present in the brain.

In the Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya, the East African green monkey (Chlorocebus sabaeus) inhabits groups of 10 to 30 individuals. They emit loud cries of alarm if they spot a predator, shriek specific sounds if they go out to meet other groups, growl threateningly when fighting with individuals in their own group, and growl quietly during relaxed social relations.

According to the type of predator, it is the sound call they emit, distinguishing three in particular: leopard, eagles and snakes. The alarm that warns of the flight of the eagle, induces them to look up or to run towards the bushes; hearing the snake alarm, they stand up on their hind legs and watch the grass; leopard alarm causes monkeys to climb trees.

The moment a green monkey hears the alert by eagle, the activation of memories related to the aerial environment is reinforced, drawing with greater clarity the diffuse aerial scene that was previously being represented in its mental correlate of the relevant environment, a scene that a moment ago he played a rather secondary role in the selection of the actions he was carrying out. The evocation of an eagle activates multiple memories that represent probable scenarios for the aerial environment, in a diffuse representation of said segment of the medium, where its brain places a flying predator. The predator, who is not being directly perceived, can either be ten meters from his head, heading directly towards him, or be within a couple of hundred meters. Faced with this uncertainty, the monkey's action is oriented to raise its head in order, using its senses, to have a more accurate representation of what is happening in its relevant environment.

The contribution to their survival expectations that the green monkey obtains thanks to the alert signal heard is evident, and in this sense the use of language is highly useful. This, despite the aforementioned uncertainty, an uncertainty that can be diminished through the action of raising the head and seeing the predator. For its part, the monkey that gave the warning voice has a more limited and accurate representation, in its mental correlate, of the predator, regarding its speed and apparent distance, its direction of flight, etc. For the monkey that emits the warning signal, fleeing and finding protection is notoriously better delineated, as expectations of action, than fleeing and protecting itself is in that of its congeners at the moment they hear the warning voice. Just a fraction of a second separates a very diffuse representation of the relevant aerial environment, from that which is achieved immediately after raising the head and seeing the predator.

  11. There is no way to detect or measure conscious awareness, or qualia. There is a way to detect and measure the neural correlates of it. In other words, scientists can prove that every time a person experiences a color, they have certain specific neural firings and frequencies. But they can't show us what that conscious experience is.
Can this be because conscious awareness is not physical? Or is it because conscious awareness is fundamental – something that if it didn't exist, physical reality wouldn't exist.
According to Dr Hoffman, you can't get there from here. You can't get to awareness as it exists in your own mind from the physics of it. This is something worth pursuing, but guess what? The subject of this theory can't be detected or measured (both of which are in the realm of physical phenomena)!
So the only was to get there is to start from not here. The question he wants to answer is – where is the "not here"?
A physicist can describe physical reality in the most minute detail. What Dr Hoffman says is that there is something in our reality that is not physical. That doesn't mean that he doesn't agree that the physical reality exists. It simply means that IN ADDITION to the physical reality, and perhaps underlying it, is another reality, one which includes conscious awareness.

  12. Just discovered Prof. Hoffman and his work on metarising. Came here to find out more, at least at a general introduction level. This is excellent! I've always took the consciousness as primary approach when thinking about reality, metaphysics, scientific mysteries. I know others have taken that approach, including actual philosophers and a few scientists, not just self-appointed armchair philosophers like me. [Takes a couple puffs on the pipe while deciding what to pontificate on next]

So, I had this insight years ago, shortly after leaving grad school. Already believed consciousness, or something like it, was fundamental, since I was a kid and could form such notions. I was reading about neuroscience, physics, and other topics, wondering how far the mechanistic, quantum, material mind-from-matter approach might go. Believing it would fail in the end, but maybe provide insights along the way.

Belief turned into certainty in my conscious mind. [Pokes pipe into the air to emphasize the point]

Neurons firing are mechanism. Whether electronic, mechanic, electrochemical, whatever, it's just blinkenlights. Unthinking matter following simple laws of behavior at the component level. No matter how many components, how they are arranged, in layers, feedback loops, hierarchical layers of multi-level recurrent chaotic feedback loops, whatever, it's still just blinkenlights. A simple input may trigger a long and fascinating light show, affected greatly by the system's history, but still, blinkenlights. It can be contrived in arrangement and function to imitate thinking processes, to play chess or translate Russian into Japanese. No materialism based theory can possibly explain consciousness, the real thing. There will be correlations, sure, but just what are the correlates? We have deep knowledge of the matter-quantum-blinkenlight side, but airy wavy-handed mystic-talk about the other side, or the only side if what I suspected was true. Could there be a scientific way to start on the other side, with consciousness and work out to the matter side? [Takes an long draw on the pipe while looking toward the past]

In the following years I had interesting discussions with fellow self-appointed armchair philosophers, and actual philosophy professors too, at the Theosophical Society, book discussion groups, and churches of the kind where such questions are welcome and explored. A lot of bad ideas go around, some good ideas, some great questions, but no real understanding at a scientific level of what apparently must remain subjective experiential experience. "Experiential experience" because just "experience" doesn't quite do it, if you get what I mean.

Now it looks like Prof. Hoffman has found a way to make some progress on all this. I'll be reading his works as time allows in the near future. This video was fantastic as an general overview of his approach. [Taps gunk in pipe into wastebasket] Well, I better get back to work. Nice having this chat with you!

[Hey, I don't smoke a pipe, or smoke anything, so why was I writing these pipe-smoking comments? Odd. Mysteries no one will ever understand…]

  13. It's becoming clearer that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with primary consciousness will probably have to come first.

  15. Brains are only a receiver the perceiver is in a way in the cloud, meaning something else in the cloud transforms that info for the brain.

  16. Consciousness – trying to find it, is like trying to find the lion, you saw chasing you in your dream. You'll never find it, even though you had a real experience. The waking state ( in the daytime) is a daydream – just like the dream at night. It appears MORE Real, yet the substance, which illuminated the lion in the night dream, is still the same substance, during the day. Scientists, are doing all these calculations within the dream. It's ridiculous – yet the cleverest, so called brains can't work it out!!

  17. If he succeeds, wouldn't it prove that not only our perception of reality, but all of science is completely made up by consciousness? And maybe even that mathematics are a blown up represantation of the most principle 'game' consciousness is playing (see Shinzen Young's Videos about the Zen-concept of expand and contract for example). The term 'reverse engineering' comes to mind. Simply looking at 'it all' in the other direction, still playing the game, but backwards. Sounds like a lot of fun! 🙂 Scientific Advaita…

  18. Here's the biggest problem with Hoffman's ideas (there are many, but the most obvious is as follows).

He relies heavily on the analogy of a computer graphical user interface to the objects of conscious experience, arguing that this shows just how wildly different avatars can be from what they represent.

This is, remarkably, supposed to support the notion that a reductionist materialist or physicalist explanation of consciousness is implausible.

He is oblivious to the fact that the graphical interface analogy actually supports the reductionist materialist paradigm.

If computer screen icons can be considered analogous to objects of conscious experience, then the underlying electronic circuitry that gives rise to them can be considered analogous to the underlying material processes of the brain.

It seems to me this computer interface analogy he relies so heavily on in making his case can serve at least as well to support the materialist reductionist model of consciousness.

It's possibly the best example of a tangible example of what a materialist solution to the hard problem of consciousness may look like that I've ever seen.

  19. We are not singular organisms, nor are we simply colonies, we are slices of ecosystems. The cells communicate with each other constantly, that is the basis of conciousness with the brain adding to that mix. I have heard that people who have had organ translants developing new likes and cravings, sometimes for things they previously hated. The core of your personality is written in the dna, tendency for anger, likes, and habits. The conciousness is not a singular thing, it is a sum of inputs.

  20. Mathematics is never about physics but about consciousness.

To understand the mathematical model of consciousness, we have to first expand the scope of consciousness beyond human. Beings in the "universe" are not just human. According to Mind-Only (Yogacara) school, there are infinitely many beings in the Form or Formless states that are non-organic or non-carbon based. These are the different types of celestial objects from planets, stars, nebulae, black holes, and white holes. The first four are Form and the last one which no matter can get in are Formless. These beings share the same consciousness architecture and mechanics with human beings.

General relativity is about the "ecological" existence and interdependency of all these beings.

Quantum mechanics is also not about physics but is about consciousness. It is called the 8th Consciousness in Mind-Only school which is different from the current or usual understanding of consciousness. It is deeply hidden which each being has and it is responsible for all being's "simulation experiences". It forms a feedback loop with a being's consciousness experiences like sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and mind. Everything in quantum mechanics arises from the wave function and the wave function is of Euler's Identity formular of e^iπ+1=0. As Euler has proven that e^iπ = cos(π) + 1 sin(π), what it means is: i = Consciousness, cos(π) = Formations, i sin(π) = Sensations, e = Perceptions, and 1 = Forms. These are the five cosnciousness mechanics shared by all beings.

Quantum mechanics is about co-creation of infinite beings and that is shown in the complex mathematics of Hilbert space where quantum wave functions live. David Gross said a hundred years is not enough for us to understand it. Jennan Ismael said there is no way to narrow down the description of the world because of whole bunch of different non-spatial temporally connected branches of spacetime that are mutually inaccessible. Leonard Susskind said we don't understand quantum mechanics as the information from the branching of the wave function is extremely large and at the end even if a specific wave function is given, we don't get the answer we started out asking in a tin can.

Quantum mechanics is about co-creation where every single particle is a co-creation of infinite beings.

Therefore, general relativity and quantum mechanics have never been about phyiscs but about consciousness. It is hard to believe but each being is a version of both general relativity + quantum mechanics mathematics as each being is a universe without an objective universe that exists out there independently – except that all beings' versions are extremely similar (as co-creation) but different. This is why physics started to see the need of multiverse.

String theory which unifies both general relativity and quantum mechanics can also automatically reproduce general relativity (if Einstein were never born) and 19 free parameters of Standard Model (vs through measurements) is 100% a conciousness theory of Mind-Only school. Infinitely many parallel universes has become a requirement in string theory.

  21. Personal Conclusions from various sources "We Are All One Consciousness" for the following reasons:

    1. In this world everything must have a cause, so that something exists because of something else, as well as ourselves.

    2. It will be very saturating / boring if we have only one physical form in this world.

    3. It will be very saturating / boring if all human beings have the exact same physical form behavior.

    4. Try to imagine emptying all the physical things around us only the remnants of humanity, then eliminating all human beings leaving only their memories, then removing all their memories leaving only their consciousness, then connecting that consciousness, feel who we are ??.

    5. Body, mind, feelings, emotions and everything in this world is always changing, so what never changes ??, that is our true self, which is true consciousness. If everything changes2 / moves who observes, there must be something fixed to be able to observe.

    6. All human beings communicate with each other is the beginning of the beginning / the future of human beings unite, only electronic devices today can unite all human beings, one day the device is implanted in the human mind and eventually man will open all access to his mind.

    7. Our body is a group / accumulation of memory accumulated brought from the beginning of the birth of the first human in the world through continuous DNA binding.

    8. Twins are born at the same time, what if all human beings are born at the same time ??. What happens if the birth of all human beings is not influenced by the dimensions of space and time ??

    9. The twins are identical to A and B, if the whole memory of A is copied to B, what is the difference ??

    10. The law of attraction (law of attraction) that our minds will attract whatever we think, because we are all like one part of the body.

    11. Like some of the video recordings of ourselves there is a video as a vocalist, a video as a violinist, as a pianist, as a drummer, etc. The video2 is made into one in one video then it will produce a more interesting orchestra, something new and more productive. our world.

    12. Man's greatest enemy is himself, at this time man is fighting against himself. By believing that we are all one, then the ego will fade because there is no difference between us.

    13. That is why the teachings of religion command us to be grateful and beneficial to many,
If you are hurting others you are actually hurting yourself, just as if you are doing good to others you are actually doing good to yourself.

    14. Could it be that we are all dreaming and our dreams meet each other at the same frequency in parallel. Have you ever, when sleeping dreamed of moving roles as someone else, it is because we are all one.

    15. We are not immortal as human beings so that we have time for us to scroll through all of life.

    16. "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience" ~ Stephen Covey, Have you ever felt that our age is too short, could our consciousness be immortal ?.

    17. We are one, only the role is different, the memory block between life is what makes people feel different / separate. Just by brainwashing / erasing his memory then someone will be a different person but his consciousness actually remains the same. One consciousness experiences various perspectives of reality.

    18. The lucky thing for us is … awareness is always towards / seeking / having intentions / desires towards good / positive / happiness despite experiencing various mistakes.

    19. When we die the body and memory are destroyed, how can we remember ever being dead.

    20. Why do we have to die? ", When we are told to die, later this eternal question will be asked again and we will always be there." The world is a sustainable life "~ Bruce Lipton

    21. In the beginning we were one, but split through a big explosion or bigbang to become different and separate as it is now, but we are provided with a sense of love for us to be able to be reunited later.

    22. There is only us and the mirror of ourselves in this world, yet there is another world out there.

    23. We will always smile happily seeing each other as ourselves "How beautiful I am" seeing a different self.

    24. If all consciousness is told now that they are all one if the experience gained is enough, the consciousness designed from the beginning is so different that there is so much intrigue, consciousness is created differently so that when it comes together it has an incredible consciousness experience.

    25. We are indeed alone in this universe, but there are still many other universes with their own laws of nature.

    26. Have you ever felt to come to a place that has never been visited but feel familiar with that place, as if we have lived in that place sometime.

    27. The world is like a script of a story that is being written by the author, sometimes changed at the beginning, sometimes changed in the middle, sometimes changed at the end it all depends on us as writers, and every story has wisdom that can be taken as a lesson.

    28. Hair grows on its own, heart beats on its own, blood flows on its own, ideas emerge on its own, etc., are we involved ??.

    29. Imagine today there was an event that caused only you to live in this world, then who are all the people yesterday ??.

    30. "If Quantum Mechanism cannot surprise you, then you do not yet understand Quantum Physics. Everything we have considered real all this time, turns out to be unreal." ~ Niels Bohr.

    31. In the scale of quantum physics we are all connected to each other, even in double gap experiments proving that particles change when observed or in other words awareness is able to change reality, this has been repeatedly proven by Nobel laureate in Physics.

    32. Everything we experience by our senses will eventually only be an electrical impulse in the brain, is it all real ??. We are beings who realize that we are conscious.

    33. We are closer than the veins of his neck.
He breathes some of His spirit on you.
Knowing oneself means knowing one's God.
Indeed, we will return to HIM. You are far I am far, you are near I am near.
    I am everywhere.
Before the existence of this world there was no material other than Him.
The True Spirit is only One, the Creator.
    I agree with your prejudice.

    34. Whether the Creator is only tasked with creating, is it possible that the creator does not want to try the results of his creation through another perspective.

    35. There is no reincarnation, it is possible that our consciousness is synchronizing, our consciousness is divided by the speed of light so that consciousness can move and divide quickly through energy, and that is why we need sleep, that is why we often do not realize something, that is why the size of the earth is reached by the speed of light so that consciousness is divided quickly and evenly, we are like some chess pawns played by a player, that is why if we move at the speed of light, then we can penetrate the dimensions of space and time, when we die we wake up and regain consciousness as long as there are human beings living in this world.

    36. Have we ever had a problem and suddenly someone came to provide a solution to the problem we are experiencing, as if someone was sent by the universe to help us in solving the problem, which is actually our own awareness that sends that person to us.

    37. A thousand years ago did human beings see, hear and be trapped in their hearts about current technological advances ??. If we all tend to sin (damage) then it will be the world of hell, if we all tend to do good then it will be the world of heaven.

    38. Knowledge learns objects, God who created our consciousness, does not allow God to be objects of knowledge.

    39. It is not possible for human creation which is only in the form of words / symbols to represent true truth.uyty

    40. Is there a meaning of being without consciousness ?? then we are adventurers of this existence.
    Sy
    41. The life of the world is just a game and a joke, the one who wins the game of the world is the one who finds his true self.

    42. When the existence of the world ends we will know everything.

    43. My consciousness undergoes a very extraordinary life experience, feeling life experience with different forms and different places even though in fact my consciousness is always the same, wow .. I was surprised !! how wide I am.

    44. Consciousness in fact does not know the concept of time, consciousness can experience / undergo into another physical form because the dimension of time can be penetrated by consciousness, as when we imagine we can act as anyone without time bound, because in this universe time can in fact materialize free, time can move straight, curved, rotate, etc. Our time travel is when our consciousness moves to a new physical experience.

    45. We are an awareness, a concept that is able to answer various things.

    46. Remember when you were going to leave, you were worried about losing me ??, calm down .. I was everywhere and we would always be able to meet again, believe me.

    47. Without searching what is the difference between us in this world and us in a dream while sleeping just passing by without meaning

    48. In conclusion, whatever role we play, it is all our own design, so just enjoy.

    49. I never said that self is God, I thought that self is one consciousness, God should be higher and perfect than consciousness.

    50. God created us to be Happy, so do not disappoint God. Understand it and be Shining.

  22. How do you spell to make a mathematical model of the consciousness of Consciousness is not in the brain
, Consciousness is part of the Soul spirit it's not in the physical body I'm talking about, it's sold and spirit we're talking about another dimension no matter physical Dimension but energy spiritual dimension how can you prove that the truth Dorothy learn how to do conscious astral projection and you can experience by yourself

  23. Am I the only one who is ecstatic about these two not wearing a mask while having perhaps one of the standards of intellectual conversations that could very well cause an existential crisis for many?

  24. Consciousness comes from the brain somehow. Just because you can’t figure it out doesn’t mean it’s not there. When the brain dies consciousness is gone. What is life? you can not explain life either. To say it’s elemental is to say nothing other than you don’t know Why is he talking about all those dead old guys. Who cares what they thought. They knew nothing of the brain.
