In 2008, Dr. Eben Alexander’s brain was severely damaged by a devastating case of bacterial meningitis, and he lapsed into a week-long coma. It was almost certainly a death sentence, but Dr. Alexander miraculously survived – and brought back with him an astounding story (told in his best-seller “Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife”).
During seven days in coma, he was plunged into the deepest realms of consciousness, and came to understand profound truths about the universe we inhabit. What he learned completely violated everything he ever knew about brain, mind and consciousness, and drove him to question some of the most fundamental assumptions of conventional science, leading to a complete flip from his former worldview.
About Dr. Eben Alexander
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Alexander received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1980. He taught neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston for fifteen years and has performed over 4,000 neurosurgical operations. During his academic career he authored or co-authored over 150 chapters and papers in peer reviewed journals, authored or edited five books on radiosurgery and neurosurgery, and made over 230 presentations at conferences and medical centers around the world. Dr. Eben Alexander spent over 25 years as an academic neurosurgeon, including 15 years at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, the Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He thought he had a very good idea of how the brain generates consciousness, mind and spirit… until he had a near-death experience.

Eben A. is truly an enlightened individual with a clear scientific mind. I have a master of science degree myself and am soooo tired of scientifically unsatisfying materialistic non-explanations when it comes to anything that can’t be directly observed with current technology. As he states, reductionist materialism is a obsolete paradigm that cannot explain consciousness let alone other observable phenomena like NDE and particle entanglement. It seems to me that the sceptics have a burden of empirical evidence that they are simply unable to lift. We are then left with ‘if I can’t measure it…’ (with what; a thermometer? It is directly and repetitively observable during NDE). Question: We also can’t measure gravity other than by indirect observation, yet we experience it and don’t question that. We don’t even know if it’s electromagnetic energy or not? Why is it so hard for some people to accept NDE experience, that they will rather settle for non-explanations that are so easy to falsify? That seems profoundly unscientific to me.
Nooooooo… I will not do this again!!! Reincarnation is a no!!! Other nde do contradict.. so. I heard no evidence of why he believes or knows.. reincarnation is real? Did I miss that part? Other than that.. I like the message. And believe it.. but I don't believe we have to do this again
Why are we here to learn what we already know?
i kinda like being an individual do you retain any individuality in that realm not necessarily of my current identity but of some sort of perspective i want to be able to explore and find new things there not just be absorbed into the light it just seems kinda boring and depresses me slightly id like some sort of progression as an individual soul or whatever rather than just being everyone at the same time
His experience is unique – so is Pam Reynolds – both convince me consciousness is more than brain. BUT the most compelling question should be – why do so many people have no experience ?
What makes one person have a vivid NDE and others absolutely nothing but oblivion. One theory is everyone who is in coma or cardiac arrest has an NDE but then they forget it upon awakening. But I am not convinced by that because such a profound experience should be recalled by everyone.

So why we sometimes don't have any experiences when we sleep or faint or are dying?
It's becoming clearer that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with primary consciousness will probably have to come first.
I looked up the book 'Irreducible mind' but it's too expensive to buy 🙁 I would have liked to read it.

I wonder if conscious after nde happens only to humans. I truly believe I am not different than other species. We are alive or not. We come to this world or not. All of us, living creatures or not

I lost interest once he mentioned reincarnation at 7:05.
Extremely interesting although the reference to Muhammad is out of place in my opinion : he was a hateful character and "Allah" was only merciful to muslims and called repeatedly for the death of all the non-believers ( Jews, Christians,Pagans…)
Listening to this as headaches are getting worse and worse… knowing they might clear up with one visit to the chiropractor… that this is what's ahead…
