7. Brains are a type of computer, and consciousness is a gradient that emerges from a system that can sufficiently organise information. A fly is less conscious than a mouse, which is less than a human. Our particularly powerful form of consciousness is based mainly on a complex system of language.
   When these discussions diverge from science and flow into the realm of philosophy, they go off the rails in my opinion.
