Unlike my other TASes, this is not me playing! These are 8 full warpless runs entirely made by SMBbot, selected from 20 attempts. It’s not an artificial intelligence, but what I call an “artificial idiot”, as it’s really dumb.
It doesn’t read map or level information, doesn’t evolve, doesn’t have much memory. It basically just jumps randomly, and loads savestates after dying or bumping into a wall.
As dumb as it is, it’s the first bot ever to complete SMB, and in speedrun style! Only 7416 retries, 4:49 in real-time computing, it completes SMB warpless in 19:26.35. Not exactly as fast as best human speedrunners, but surely more stable and fast in average.

Okay, this is actually incredible. It LOOKS like TAS, but technically isn’t!
And it’s still a faster time than I’d ever manage to get, haha.
EDIT: Oh my goodness, that 8-4 was anxiety inducing, for real!!!

You could take this, make some small modifications in each level, and you'd have a pretty good small only TG rules TAS

So this is less of an AI and more of a solver. Building up a sequence of actions. Each time it teaches an obstacle it tries all possible moves to pass it, including undoing previous steps in the sequence and starting again from there.
Am I in the ballpark?

The movement of the bot in the room before the water room in 8-4 was interesting. If you jump randomly, the chances of wall catching and wall jumping are pretty low, so how did it get those 2 walljumps there?
