Exhibition Preview: Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time

Whitney Museum of American Art

Edward Hopper’s use of the subject matter of modern life to portray universal human experiences made him America’s most iconic realist painter of the early twentieth century. Drawn primarily from the Whitney’s extensive holdings, this exhibition places Hopper’s achievements in the context of his contemporaries, including such artists as John Sloan, Alfred Stieglitz, Charles Sheeler, Paul Strand, Charles Demuth, Guy Pène du Bois, and others.

Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time is on view through April 10, 2011. For more information on the exhibition, visit http://www.whitney.org/Exhibitions/ModernLife
