Explaining Fusion in Steven Universe

Steven Universe is a show that prides itself on its relationships, both through their interactions and through fusions. A fusion is the physical manifestation of one or more gems relationship, and creates an entirely new being.

Join us today as we discuss what fusions are, fusion pronouns, and common fusion misconceptions.

  2. I would love to know how Rebecca comes up with the fusion gemstones. Nobody thought that Amethyst and Steven were going to create Smokey, due to the colors not blending and matching up to brown

  3. I think the biggest misconception ever is that fusions are just a combination of the two gem's designs, as in like they take some elements from each character's designs. While this is common in more unstable fusions like malachite and human fusions like Smoky or Stevonnie, I believe that fusions also acquire their own personal looks, while still having a little flair from each component, if any of that makes sense.

  4. Yeah, while fusion isn’t an allegory for sex. There are some some sexual moves for some fusions. For example, when the gems were teaching Steven how to fuse, Garnett literally pins Pearl to a wall. Like it’s clearly obvious

  5. I thought that Smoky had 3 arms because steven was half human, but rainbow has 2 and sunstone has 4. So when rose fused with amethyst, smoky quartz's arms were just like that.

  6. I think the reason Steven was able to fuse with connie was because his magic spit healed her eye in the juice box episode. Which meant that a part of Steven's magic was with Connie's eye.So that's how they fused and Greg and Rose didn't physically fuse.

  7. 4:42 Amethyst isn't considered as a maternal figure to steven but more of a sister-like figure. In fact, I don't think no one of the three gems are considered maternal to Steven (maybe garnet a little? ) this because it's a fanon/fanservice concept adopted in some episodes but it is not true.

  8. Also, the less compatible/more unstable a fusion is, the more "monstrous" it will look. In other words, it will have more eyes and limbs. A stable fusion like Garnet is more humanoid, with only one extra eye. Meanwhile Malachite has four eyes, four legs, and two arms. Noting how many extra limbs a fusion has gives a good idea of how stable the relationship is and how well the personalities work with each other. Also, this one is kind of obvious, but typically the more powerful a fusion is the bigger it is.

  9. Thank you for validating nonbinary pronouns! I am transmasculine nonbinary and I use both they and he pronouns, so imagine how hard I fell in LOVE with quartz 2.0!!! Im hoping we can see more male-voiced fusions, too. I can finally feel comfortable cosplaying a gem with my deep voice! 😀

  10. There is the big misconception that the type of relationship affects the appearence of the fusion, some people still say that even after having seen gems like catterpillar grandma

  11. Saying that fusion can't be an allegory to sex because gems are asexual and therefore don't need sex to reproduce makes it seems as though you don't know what an allegory means.
I mean, I can understand you sayin that it's not an allegory for sex for whatever other reasons you chose. But them not needing actual sex to reproduce isn't really an argument for that; since allegories are basically metaphors. So gems don't need to have sex to have something that SYMBOLISES sex.
Specially, since when people say that fusion is an allegory to sex, thy mean that it's an allegory to the intimacy of sex. You can disagree of course, but gems not needing sex is not a valid argument.
I personally do believe that fusion CAN be an allegory for sex IN CERTAIN CONTEXTS.
Of course that fusion isn't sex when it comes to Steven and the gems for isntance. But in the case of Garnet, I do believe that fusion does represent sex (among many other parts of a relationship), since it is between other things a display of physical intimacy (much like sex is).
In the book "fusion for begginers and experts" they even cover theidea of consent when it comes to fusion. Which doesn't make fusion equal to sex, but it grants it some similarity in the sense that they both represent a form of great intimacy; "the ultimate form of intimacy" in Pearl's words. And while you might argue that sex isn't necessarily the ultimate form of intimacy, it is the ultimate form of PHYSICAL intimacy for a romantic relationship. And physical intimacy is a part of fusion. And while not all fusions are romantic, some are; and it is in those cases that I believe fusion can represent sex.

  12. Okay stupid Idea that I have to share with you guys don't take it offensive….

Okay what do you think about the Pronouns Gey/Gem for Gems ?

Okay now you can start to hate.

  13. I was wondering about fusions who have unstable personalities {not unstable relationships} due to the combination of their counterparts' personalities, like Sugilite. Although she might be more controlled the next time we see her, I just wanted to ask about this part of fusions. Just asking about their personality, aside from the fact that fusions that are manifestations of relationships.

  14. Another misconception is that people think gems "need" to dance in order to fuse. I think it's clear at this point it's not needed, dancing just helps synchronizing and it's probably something the Crystal Gems came up with. I see people ask "why aren't they dancing?" and the answer to that is it's not necessary.

One thing I'm not so sure on is your argument to the fusion isn't sex thing. I mean you're completely right that gems don't reproduce sexually and all that but when people say it's sex, it's not meant to be literal. People are saying it's representative of sex, which is another meaning entirely instead of saying "the gems are having sex when they fuse-"
When people say it's the "gem equivalency to sex", they mean it's the gems version of physical intimacy like sex.
However, I do believe it doesn't represent sex regardless, as fusion represents relationships, intimacy in said relationships and intimacy isn't strictly sexual. Fusion is meant to be open ended showcasing all kinds of relationships so for it to represent sex just kinda ruins that.

  15. I really want Rebecca Sugar to say that this is canon.
I always wanted to se Ruby and Sapphire fuse with another gem. Not like Garnet but like themselves. I mean look at Suggilite. She's a fusion of Garnet and Amethyst. You might say that where is Sapphire??? Thats cause Suggilite isnt a fusion of Ruby, Sapphire and Amethyst. She has 2 main personality factors. 1 from Amethyst and 1 from Garnet. The rest is well….. HER. Fusions arent just combined personalities. Yeah, they do play a major roll in deciding the "Main" personality but they arent 50% Garnet and 50% Amethyst personalities. Suggilite just kind of goes after 20% Garnet and 20% Amethyst. The other 60% is Suggilite herself. (This may depend on the stability of the relationship in fusions). So I kinda want to see Sapphire, Ruby and Amethyst fuse together. I think we would get a completly diffrent Suggilite both in personality and in her looks. And what about Opal and Garnet fusing??? I want to see another version of Alexandrite! And imagine what Obsidian would be if Sardonix and Smokey fused!

  16. Awesome video! Also something I would like to put in is how mutated and screwy Malachite looks, because that’s lead me to believe that the healthier and better adjusted the relationship is, the more normal and adjusted the fusion looks.

  17. Before watching the video, here's what I think fusions are:
The gems that make up the fusion are basically training the fusion, holding onto it at all times. That's why some of the dialogue seems more directed towards one gem at times. Ruby and Sapphire were able to train Garnet, so they let her free, creating whatever she wanted. However, Garnet still leaves traces of Ruby and Sapphire, and that's why some dialogue still relates to what they would say. When a fusion unfuses, I think there's a certain disagreement between the characters[or they just get tired or powerless], and since the fusion of two characters relies on the two agreeing and feeling the same way and caring for each other, the fusion seizes to exist, leaving the two gems back in their own bodies. The reason one gem can basically take over, like Malachite, is because Jasper is sort of rolling Malachite along, leaving Lapis behind, and at one point, Lapis was able to run ahead. I think after fusing multiple times, Jasper and Lapis grew a strange longing to be together. They might have only fused for one same reason: to gain power, or to get revenge, or something like that. Sugalite ran free of Amethyst and Garnet, that's why she was so chaotic. Stevonnie, I say the magic of l0o0o0vee….

    After watching the video:
    I agree.

  18. Hi, I was wondering if you could make a video explaining each fusion and who fuses to make that fusion. I’m trying to understand every character. Thanks!

  19. Right ok, so idk where to put this, except I want to ask you a question and point something out to you Toon Ruins. Padparadsha (idk how to spell it) is orange or yellow meaning she came from yellow diamond and Garnets sapphire came from Blue diamond. So what if Pad can’t see the future because she is an era two gem, and Garnets Sapphire is also a era two gem. Hear me out here, what if sapphires only get their future vision based on what time period their diamonds focus on the most but almost in reverse. Blue diamond focussed more on the past and how she wished things would go back to normal whereas Yellow diamond doesn’t, and focuses more on the present time and what has just happened meaning yellow or orange sapphires don’t have future vision because yellow diamond doesn’t dwell in the past. Just a thought, and again I didn’t know where to post or put this.

  20. Aw come on lea, why didja have to ruin fusion by saying it wasn’t an allegory for lesbian sex, I would’ve liked it if it was one(I’m not a creep or sexual weirdo I just found the idea of fusion being an allegory for lesbian sex interesting okay).
