● Date: Saturday 13 May 2017
● Location: Flemish Arts Centre De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam

►Memo Akten (TR/UK) -Intelligent Machines that Learn: What Do They Know? Do They Know Things?? Let’s Find Out! ‘
Memo Akten is an artist from Istanbul, based in London. His work explores the collisions between nature, science, technology and culture and uses complex algorithms and software to dramatize and mimic natural processes. He is currently doing his PhD on artificial intelligence, exploring the ways in which computers, data and algorithms can collaborate with humans in making new artistic expressions. Using technology not as a tool, but as a non-human entity that can support and work with us. Exploring the soul of the computer and the possibilities of a more poetic approach to collaboration between man and machine. http://www.memo.tv/

● FF17 Conference Session – The Homunculus: creativity in the age of intelligent machines
Recent developments in the field of artificial intelligence have made this technology accessible for artists and designers. According to AI expert Danny Hills, humans are entangled with nature and technology this augmented status will lead to new forms of beauty. Artists and designers are just like the the ancient alchemists recreating life in their labs, they are training neural networks to function as an autonomous creative agents. What is the aesthetic potential of these artificially intelligent ‘companion species’? And how does this change our idea of creativity?

►About FIBER Festival 2017 – Prima Materia: alchemical thinking and making in art, design and music
The FIBER team retrieved its inspiration for the 2017 years theme by its fascination over connections between todays experimental art/design practices and a renewed interest in the ancient field of alchemy. Through an extensive program of conference talks, a public exhibition, AV performances, and live electronic music, the festival explores the theme Prima Materia; alchemical thinking and making in art, design and music.

Prima Materia showcases artists and designers who question and reimagine the relationship between man, technology and matter. Technology has a profound effect on nature and we’re in great need to create a sustainable and more emotional relation with the earth. At the same time it is getting harder and harder to predict our future as a human race in the context of fast technological developments of things like artificial intelligence, big data and decentralised networks – developments that feel almost like organic, all-encompassing forces of nature. The human scale and the tools that we use to interpret the world are being radically transformed. We seem to be caught in the middle of invisible forces.
