  1. Love these videos Mike. Retro Matt and I always called him JA-KEY-OH, even as kids. I always thought it was a French name as well. Interesting stuff as always.

  2. I'd always pronounced it as Yak-ee-oh because I assumed it was meant to be a Spanish pronunciation. It was only recently that I learned about the "King of Demons" / "King of Devils" meaning in Japanese and the proper Jackie Oh pronunciation. It's definitely confusing.

  3. Loved it! My brother and I always pronounced it “Jaw-kwee-oh”, accenting the “jaw”. Then again, I was born in WV so I don’t think my linguistics from back then are worth much. :0

I did always think he was a very scary villain. He had a great theme song as well when you first meet him in the cutscenes of Ninja Gaiden. Very ominous and catchy tune

  4. Awesome, really enjoy this series! I haven't really thought about it in forever but I said "Ja-kwee-oh", but now that I have a friend Jacque (Jackie), "Ja-key-oh" totally is it.

  5. It seems to be a mis-Romanization. Even the fansubs of the OVA don't seem to get it right, as it would be Jaki-Oh (邪鬼王), not "jakyo." (See also, the Super Famicom game Majyuu-Oh/Majyuuou or "King of Demons.")

Also, one of my favorite things is that the PC Engine port of Ninja Gaiden has a hidden English translation (despite being only released in Japan) and the team that did it translated Jacquio as "Devildoer."

  6. Some deep research done here! The good thing about my favorite series Onimusha, is that all their names are usually spoken. The time before voice acting was a major exploration into the unknown

  7. I don't know if you still remember but I'm the one who offered to lend my service if ever you needed it for other Gaming Linguistics videos. Unfortunately I don't really use social media like Twitter or Facebook (as you suggested in your last stream). Is there another way I could get in touch with you?
