I'm not exactly sure why this happens but after a certain point he will no longer attack you, also you have to run outside the gate to stop the gun men shooting you. I found that to consistently get him to follow you you should walk as slowly as you can (without getting shot) until you are outside the gate at which point he will slowly start to back away, this is when you kill him.
