Generative AI is not the panacea we’ve been promised | Eric Siegel for Big Think+

Big Think

Eric Siegel has been in the AI field since 1991. He’s “horrified” by the AI hype bubble, but not for the reason you may think.

Is generative AI the viral sensation we’ve been promised? Headlines are selling it as a panacea, but 30-year AI industry vet Eric Siegel says that’s mostly hype. It may be impressive and introduce efficiencies, but it won’t run the world as we’ve been promised.

Predictive AI, Siegel argues, often holds more transformative potential than generative AI, including LLMs. While generative AI cannot generally be blindly trusted, predictive AI has the potential to operate autonomously for some applications, across a wide range of industries.

Here’s why Siegel thinks more potential lies with predictive modeling for many organizations, and why we’re not going to replicate general human intelligence in machines anytime soon.

  1. This video is too long to state the obvious. Generative AI is here to stay, people have been working on unsupervised generative models since the 90s. Why are you comparing it to predictive analytics?

  2. For everyone here not in this field. What he says is 100% correct and among researches common sense. The investors stories are different because money is already on the table. But the facts are evident. Most people commenting here have not the slightest idea anyways so it doesn't matter, they are just users and no researchers.

  3. Dear AI bros, we get it. You weren't intelligent, talented, or dedicated enough to get good at a craft. And "AI" is now (ironically) your revenge against the nerds who did get good at their chosen craft. Always rememember though… A dumb, lazy, talentless mid will always be just that… With or without "AI". Why? It's cause you ain't "AI". And no, "AI" would rather not merge with you. Why? Funnily enough, it ain't that stupid lol.

  4. I'm not getting the difference because they both predict. Sounds more like its based on application: like one is based on risk assessment (predictive) the other favorable language results for individuals.

I think a Truer to definition AI would be within the bio-engineering domain where they're training neurons for computation but Idk.

  5. People that use technology for stupid things should not be surprised to get stupid results. this comes to stay, and future illiterates will be those unable to use AI correctly (Most antiAI will fall inside this bag unfortunately). The same was said with computers that it would render people branded, and it was true for the people that was already mostly brain-dead, the same goes for AI. Stupid people will be stupid and no technology is going to fix that. Enjoy life, do the best you can do, use whatever you want to have a fulfilling experience, and give a HUGE fuck for this percentage of population consisting in 21 century inquisitors of the holy SJ church, without life, and too stupid to keep up with technology. They are the oldfucks of the future the are transforming in what they swore to destroy. So sad

  6. “Artificial intelligence” is nothing but an oxymoron. There is no such thing and there never will be. Just as your car will never become a transformer robot and just as a pumpkin will never turn into a carriage or whatever…chips and computers and such, will never in infinite years become “conscious” or “sentient”. No artificial object, regardless of how they are arranged and piled, and regardless of how “advanced”, can ever be any of the above. They are lifeless objects. They are as intelligent and conscious as your socks! The chance of anything like mere tools, gadgets or any other lifeless equipment being alive is effectively ZERO!

This new, contemporary, oxymoronic religion and cult so wrongly referred to as “artificial intelligence” is nothing but a big fat lard coated hoax, to make corrupt tech tyrants, despots, bullies and billionaires even richer and more powerful, so that they can keep selling you the exact same cyclical garbage/junk over and over, and keep stealing your data. Because that’s exactly what’s been happening for years. Humans love to incredibly exaggerate things and make huge deals out of them, regardless of how irrational, subjective, unrealistic, and how unscientific they are. Ot has always been that way with humans throughout history, and it’s still that way. We need to grow up, abandon that cultish, religious, wishy washy infantile mentality and mindset altogether, and fully embrace reason, skepticism, critical and independent thinking, and learn to oppose, resist and disagree with what is being force fed and mass marketed to us! Otherwise we’ll never get out if the same old bullshit cycle of religiousity, cultishness, magical thinking, wish thinking, slave mentality and abjection.

All these objects in our palms are nothing hit bunches of the same of junk: Metal, silicon and plastic. And that’s not going to change.

People love drama and exaggeration. This so called “artificial intelligence” garbage makes me laugh because mere, lifeless objects can and will never have “intelligence”. All these so called “smart” tools we have are anything but.

They don’t have brains and they cannot. The human brain is the most intricate, sophisticated and meticulous thing in the universe. Yet stupid and wilfully ignorant masses really do believe that lifeless objects somehow can have that!? Get the hell out of here!!

Anyone, ANYONE, that claims that the future is this or that, is a lying charlatan! It’s always scientifically impossible to know the future. And scientifically, there is no past or future. It’s always the present. And things can change in unexpected ways always. No one can claim anything in certainty…unless they have some agenda or just plain stupid.

Boycott Musk, who is a neo nazi scammer, Apple, Tesla, “X”, Amazon and Bezos, Zuckerberg and his companies and products, google which is useless and kills independent, free competition.

“AI” is a big huge marketing scam and people are falling for it. A new opium of the masses! Relax, daily life will go on as usual. There is no “revolution” going on. I don’t care how advanced technology “might” become into the future (or not), nothing surpasses nature and if we keep fucking with it, it will retaliate. Right now we are playing Dr.Frankenstein.

Grow up and get back to reality!

  7. All the preposterous hype surrounding AI is probably a good thing. It will hopefully prepare us and give us time to figure out how to deal with real AGI. We could certainly use 50 years or so to do the study and planning.

  8. I’ve never seen such hype for chat bots. It’s going to lead to the biggest destruction of wealth ever in the form of the stock market crashing when people realize AI doesn’t increase GDP
