  1. It is never an insult to ask art to do
things for us,to be a practical part of our daily lives.
We honor art most whenwe give it the highest task of all:
to help us to lead better lives.
    I can't agree more.

  2. I'd love to show my students this, but my school won't allow any imagery containing nudity. If anyone else knows of documentaries that are more appropriate please let me know. I want to get my middle school students into art history, but the school's rules get in my way.

  3. Isaiah 40:31
"but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
    God bless ❤

  5. Art was propaganda for the rich.
    Now the media do that.
    Art was a bourgeois hobby.
    Now video games do that.
    Art was a design skill.
    Now computers do that.
    Art was illustrated philosophy.
    Nobody's paying for that.
    Art is a retirement activity.
    Ok that's is happening.
    Happy little tree.

  6. Hi, thanks for another great video! One thing I didn't really like about it is how you used the dichotomy East-West and only mentioned Thai sculpture very briefly as if it was representative of all the rest. The so called "East" includes many different civilizations from Arab countries to India, China, Japan which are not necessarily similar to each other. The point about art being "for art's sake" only it is not something French have invented, but it has long existed in Chinese painting and calligraphy for instance. I am not expert on other civilizations therefore I am not able to provide other examples. Overall the content is very interesting, but I think for the sake of the video would have been better to just talk about "Western" art. I would like to know what you think about it, and thank you again for your work! 🙂

  7. I would argue that what makes something ´good art´ is both a mix of purpose and creativity. If the purpose is rebellion from the standard norms, okay that works. Early modern art still does something. But once the creativity is taken away and the purpose is lost, that´s when it´s not very good. If it fails to have message and simply copies others who had it, I don´t understand why on earth it should be considered of high quality. It has no reason to exist.

  8. this is probably the most misguided story on art, and i feel there is a political purpose behind it. art was always politically oriented by exhibiting and reminding its viewers what they are and how to behave. even if you wanted to change that "how" you would create images to advertise it. using l'art pour l'art statement you take art off the track to advertise the new world to come. Art now should advertise the death of God, that would be monotheism, in short the family tree of christianity, islam, and judaism. instead of that we are seeing contemporary art. a brilliant political move i must say.

  9. Gotta love how this guy accepts the poet's take on art for art's sake as correct without acknowledging any counterpoints by people like Frederick Nietzsche.

Always gotta watch out for these "infographics" type of channels that purport to give you the full picture.

  10. This video is a surprising failure in the series . Art started in rock caves 10,000 years ago ,art prospered in ancient classical Greece , in renaissance in Italy . Yet you did not mention them at all. I should say it is a shallow explanation of art, while I appreciate the rest of your series

  11. Let me tell in the introduction might be an error because the question about the purpose of art was made also by ancient thinkers, i.e. Plato who even condemned some forms of art considering them as mere "copy" of the true reality.

  12. Modern art is simply privilege. To deny the common man art on restrictive rules that aren't defined. To be able to spend millions on something worthless, and no matter what you do,you'll never compete with them.

  13. Good subject, brief explanation, right off today art has not the meaning or purpose of 100 yrs ago and before.
It served as an informative picture. There were no cameras,tv,Internet, radio,… it was to entertain, a picture says a 1000 words

  14. If anything has value at all it must increase net happiness and decrease net suffering. Go ahead and increase your net happiness today by checking out the art I have charitably provided on my channel…

  15. I finally understand modern art and art in general. After years having watched this video, I now feel that the purpose of art is to make us rethink the world, until we understand the value of all existing things.

  16. The problem with this video is that it is only limited to visual art. Indeed, art is much more diverse than its visual form (music, cinema, literature are other forms of art).
