How AI is Changing the Way We View Intelligence, the World, and Ourselves: Sam Spaulding at TEDxYale

TEDx Talks

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. Humans are the paramount & yardstick – all of these ideas about intelligence are a product of human intelligence. Mechanical & biological processes for intelligence might be comparable in some ways (Searle's Chinese Room is pure tabulation – we are not merely tabulators, but may be in part). The key is that our chemical anatomical structure (represented by neurons), has all the capacities we need for 'comprehensive awareness' (as 'intelligence'). 2. It's good to see bright young minds making headway in such an exciting field. Here are my thoughts. Computer logic… far from human intelligence. Call it what it already is… artificial intelligence. Of course the definition will change as our knowledge of the brain increases… AI is just another measuring stick to better describe human intelligence. We barely understand how we work and I believe we'll only ever understand a small fraction of ourselves. The gap to completely understanding the human brain is insurmountable/impossible… comparable to that of AI ever reaching close to human intelligence. You might ask what my definition/understanding of "intelligence" is. Well I need only ask you to look at yourself… everyone knows what it is with out having to voice it or truly understand it… it's self evident. You are striping human intelligence to the output… pick ball up… go get an object… observed human output patterns which are then modeled into some form of AI. You are not considering the source of human thought … something we barely understand… feeling and self awareness and such driving our actions. AI will always remain AI no matter how realistic "it" appears.
