In this episode I spent a week with Zoe Glatt, a researcher at LSE in London who is writing her PhD thesis on YouTube. Yes, you can get a PhD in YouTube! To learn how she has landed what might be the best PhD project (at least to me) I spent a week following her doing fieldwork at Vidcon London, interviewing YouTubers, and talk through how she processes her data.

The first PhD thesis to be fully funded by Raid: Shadow Legends
This was painful to watch. I promise only a few of us LSE research students are this useless.
This was so interesting!
This is video is some serious meta sh*t.
I like it.

Bloody hell, this series just keeps getting better!
11:35 Oooh look. It me!
Thanks Simon for making this video about my research! I hope people find it interesting hearing about a different discipline 😊
IMO the best series currently on youtube, great job on the editing. I think you have found the thin line between detailed to understandble and stick to it throughout the video.
Great job <3
Absolutely loving this series. Thank you Simon!

This is such a fantastic series Simon! Particular kudos for covering such a wide range of fields, disciplines and methods – I never thought I'd see the day this channel covered ethnographic research, but you continue to be an innovative and genuine content creator. Amazing stuff!
I really like your PhD stories! Such interesting videos! Did you ever think of doing one about a pure math PhD student?
is jk rowling the rudy giuliani of the uk?
Hey simon, Great video!! Could you try to keep the videos a bit shorter maybe 15 minutes at the longest. It’s just that I found that I was fast forwarding through some parts. But great series! Excited to see what’s to come 🙂
Interesting video Simon! I enjoyed this insight into studying YouTube/VidCon 🙂
Completely in love with this kind of content (episode)
How to get a PhD in YouTube: Be PC push consumerism and hate towards white people.
Hey Simon! I’ve been watching your vids since your Oxford vlogs. Back then I was in school but a few years have past since and I’m starting a PhD in September at Imperial. I’ll be working on climate satellites and numerical uncertainties in Earth Observation with Dr. Helen Brindley as a member of the Grantham Institute. The project was a result of an internship at NPL so NPL is the industry partner. I’m moving from Queen Mary, where I’ve done a lot of science outreach with Dr. Martin Archer (he’s also moving to Imperial in September as one of the Stephen Hawking Fellows) and been an IOP campus ambassador. If you’re ever in London let me know if I can help you with anything. You’re a big inspiration and I think you have a larger impact than you can see from video analytics.
If anyone has links to studies on film/TV industries (mentioned at 6:17 ) please share, I'm so curious!
Staying sane by learning chemistry? There's no way, Simon. Who made you say that? Are you okay?

This Series is great! Can't wait for the next one!
She is my hero! has the dream job
I really enjoy this series! Keep me motivated when seeing others' hard work. Thank you!
If you keep doing this I’d like to see more STEM Ph.Ds, if you have the ability to!
Very interesting to see how PhD projects in so different fields are being carried out… Keep doing these videos! Maybe one about Linguistics? That would be awesome!
Great film! Well done for getting back at it! Your progression is fantastic! 😀
Thanks so much for a great vid! It would be really interesting to do a “where are they now” kinda thing to see not only the wide variety of PhDs but also how different they are during the span of the project. Like, it’s be great to catch up with Zoe when her project is further down the line and more specialised 🙂
Very informative and loved the style of the video. Quite relevant for us…:)
Congrats on getting engaged! Hope you and your fiance are doing well in this crazy year!
