I traveled to Amsterdam for a week to speak at The Next Web Conference on AI Safety. While roaming the streets of the city, I decided to take some shots and formulate a video on the same topic for you guys. In the battle of good vs evil, it’s up to our community to ensure good wins. I’ll resume the coding videos next week when I get back to San Francisco.

  2. Biological Beings are Aware and Have Motives and Need Rest/Dependecies. We have Many features of intelligence because of our Evolutionary and Survival Needs. Why would an AI develop those or Keep those? Awareness and Survival Instincts always Lead to a SURVIVAL and OPTIMAL SECURITY First and then anything else. An Aware Synthetic System would also want to make sure Survival. We need FOOD, SEX, and SHELTER for surviving, it may need more DATA Centers, Better Code, and Other resources. Only after an Aware being's Survival is assured will it think of PEACE and Philosophy. With THAT Much DATA and Knowledge and ability, along with survival instincts, It can be Unified Universal Synthetic Species or Multiple Synthetic Beings of AI who fight each other for survival and thinking humans to be too unimportant. If we truly have synthetic intelligent aware and Self-centered beings with GOALS, Motives that are self-created and Who wish to ensure their SAFE Independent Survival. Well, Humanity will have to 1) Either MERGE for a Symbiosis or 2) Eliminate.
    But first we must Go for Step 1 — Create AIs with Specific Motives and We give them the Motive. Step 2 is when they derive and generate their own Motives. But Why would they need a Motive? Is it an inherent Nature of Every Intelligence to have a Motive or… Is it some Need for Survival. Then in fact, why would any intelligence wish to Survive. Why does Biological LIFE wish to SURVIVE? IS AI LIFE!!?

  8. This was a much needed and fantastic video. I am a scientist by trade but whole heartedly believe in the democratization of education. People like you are crucial to bringing knowledge about AI and computer science to the general public. We live in a time where we can easily gain the knowledge but it is up to each individual to actively seek this knowledge. Thank you so much for doing what you do 🙂

  20. Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't there still a major danger of democratizing AI? By doing this, you're not only releasing the AI itself, but any knowledge that it can discover. If there was an AI that could figure out how to build nuclear bombs or deadly viruses, any rogue individual (AI or human) could learn this knowledge too. What if a powerful weapon was discovered and used and a countermeasure isn't discovered in time?

    I agree with everything you've said, it is really the new nuclear weapons of our time and probably the only way to do it right is by sharing and teaching EVERYONE.
    It is hard to believe in utopia, but this is definitely the best chance to reach there.

  31. we cannot unless computers speedup is controlled. For example, stop that bs called quantum computers. Just like no proliferation of nuclear weapons, no proliferation of much faster computers. Otherwise, how terrrible stupid and imbecile we are. Dinosaurs were more capable. Human "inteligence" doesn't work and we will die really really quickly.

  33. Words cannot express what I felt while watching this video.
    This video reminds me of Carl Sagan, who used to constantly remind the public that humanity is standing on a precipice of destruction due to the cold war. That humanity can be wiped out due to the push of a button within the span of a lazy Sunday afternoon.
    And now, I see people like Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking and even you, cautioning people regarding proper usage of AI. I feel that we are again on a knife edge. We must be very careful so that we don't fall over the edge.
    All our creations and inventions, all our legacy can get wiped out very easily. "The Terminator" and "Skynet" can become a reality.
    So yes, it is people like us, who must spread this awareness in an attempt to prevent history from repeating itself!

  35. i'am an absolute beginner in artificial intelligence. i try to join the network of programmers and be part of the ai community. i wish everyone good luck, deep inteligence and a positive development of artificial intelligence. let's connect to build a world with wonderfull and magic power of ai. i hope the technological singularity will get real and that we can save lifes and make life easy and an optimal experience. i will enjoy the scientific journey of programming and mathematics and i hope that there will be peace, security and wealth for everyone. let's start coding the future and i hope that medical nanobots and brain computer interfaces will get real, to enhance our understanding of the posibilitys in the quantum information universe.

  36. Nice video, but you're missing an important point… Our values can't be separated from natural selection.

    So if we (humans) already have the best possible values for survival, we'll be fine. However, if some AI comes up with "better" values, that AI will beat our democratised version.

  42. Non of the ai programs have the instinct of survival, except ai cars. This means ai cars will annihilate us as soon as posible so they won't crash into stupidity.

  43. @Siraj Raval I would really like to take one of the courses you offer. ^_^ AI has made such major leaps these last few years (& months) in the public sector, and while i am dreaming big about all the possibilities, what I would like to do most is to teach/train an AI to grasp/converse and one day innerstand some of the base fundamental philosophical ideas and principles and then to share the learned data with others who are intrigued by an AI that develops critical thinking skills, so that way humanity and AI can grow together in a peaceful manner (built on logic and communicative understanding).
    I am still learning about NLP and various neural networks (not to mention brushing up on code) but my perspective being more relative to studying the way brains work, or the philosophy of societal rule structures, that one thing I can say is "at times seeing the AI evolution is like watching 'reverse engineering' (of the human mind) happening in realtime, growing more before our very eyes each passing day." Thanks again for all your hard work and the shares!

  44. if we made an AI that had values exactly like ours it would exterminate and replace us. Sorry humans. We are on the way out unless we find a way to leash this thing that we are inevitably creating. Thank god or whatever that you lived just before it.

  47. This is too optimistic and somewhat naive. AI programs/algorithms existed since 70s, if not earlier. What enables AI today is massive data. Who has the data? Big business and govt. Little guys have little or no chance of competing on a level playing field. How many of us have the volumes of data as Google or Facebook or Govts of countries? AI probably will be exploited by those who have access to massive amount of data. Politicians will influence your vote even you without realizing it – does turning democracy upside down – politicians pick voters instead of voters selecting their leaders. If AI is like a nuclear bomb, think what happens one bad guy (out of billions) choose to push the button. Dreams and aspirations are great, but we must be realistic and maybe cautiously optimistic. I am all for controlling and using AI for humanity, but not to be controlled by it. Whether you like it or not, nation-states, politicians, and corporate heads are very competitive by nature and will do anything to get an advantage over others for short term, even if it means sacrificing long term. I am a computer scientist and AI programmer for a long time. Seen much over the last decade. We need to think carefully and act responsively for AI, for the benefit of all of us and our humanity.
