I Memorized the Dictionary to Learn Spanish. The Results Shocked Me.

Bored of quarantine, I decided to spend the week memorizing the dictionary to learn Spanish. I’ve done lots of language challenges and learned many things in my life, including learning Chinese, but this was one of the most difficult challenges I’ve ever undertaken.

It’s a little different from my typical “White Guy Speaks Chinese” videos but the results of this experiment genuinely shocked and amazed me and I’m so glad I decided to do it!

Regarding the app I use to memorize, it’s called Anki, a free and open source cross-platform app that’s the most efficient way to memorize huge amounts of vocabulary in different languages. It’s based on a system called spaced repetition. You can read more about it and download it here: https://apps.ankiweb.net/index.html

The dictionary I bought is called the Spanish Frequency Dictionary – Essential Vocabulary. You can buy it from mostusedwords.com. However, I found a shared Anki you can download that has the 2500 most common words already loaded up, with audio and visuals — you can check that out here: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/241428882

  1. Spanish is too easy tho. There's literally no grammar to be aware about. If you learn it just by learning the words and then start talking to people you'll get the hang of it in no time.

  2. I'm a native Spanish speaker, I have to say this is really impressive. Within a week you learned how to read Spanish and plenty of words, that's insane.

  3. 99.99 % of Spanish/Castilian speakers have no clue about using accent marks correctly. It’s not the same:
    Pérdida que perdida
    Revólver que revolver
    Papá que papa
Spanish is quite complex y’all, but luckily our pronunciation is way easier than most languages’. Source: I’ve lived in Mexico my whole life.

  4. Yo creo que eres 👽 quien recuerda todas esas palabras en poco tiempo? don’t worry 👽don’t get the virus. Only people with dirty hands do. Yo siempre supe cute guys are smarter than ugly ones. No, I just kidding. Tu eres muy inteligente, es todo. 😘

  5. What is the capital of Finland… In Spanish you ask: Cual es? Which is? I noticed that… My husband who speaks a little Spanish has the habit of saying what is… instead of which is… the correct way to use "cual" , is saying "which" . Spanish as you now can tell isn't that easy to speak correctly but it isn't impossible to learn. I don't know if you have a synonyms /antonyms dictionary in Spanish, it will be pretty handy. Spanish is a rich language. Before I officially learned to speak English, I used to listen to a lot of English songs, helped with words and pronunciation.

  6. That was great man! Spanish is my mother tongue and I know there are a lot of similarities between the languages, that been said, I know a lot of people who still struggle learning English for years. You've just proven that it's all a matter of motivation and productivity. I am learning Mandarin, already been learning it for a year now. How can you recommend me to learn the words in Ankki or any other app? Verbs, advers, nouns? What should I start with?

  7. Your translations are on point, dont worry about how the webpage is translating them you are getting your point across in Spanish perfectly, you dont have to speak like a robot, its more natural if you say it your way.

Edit: Also thanks for the video, ill look for this program to learn a language that i need, i speak English and Spanish now but my goal is to learn at least a couple more languages.

  8. Guys it's not hard. I grew up with 7 languages and my friends are polyglots too. It's mostly about the time you put in. It's not hard. One hour a day won't get you anywhere haha.

  9. Ok, I did a similar experiment unintentionally. I thought German has some really cool words and just started looking up German words on Google translate in my free time. It took about a month for me to memorize 100 words or so, which sounds horrible, but I was really focusing on pronunciation. The next month was the coronavirus quarantine and I easily ramped up to 1000 words a month. At no point did I strain to learn anything. I steered clear of words I couldn't pronounce or just didn't like. I didn't use an Anki app, even though I had it. I didn't care about learning how to say "I would like to order one coffee" which I considered boring practical stuff. I focused on vocab regarding nature, animals, just things I liked. Without really trying, I picked up grammar without trying too hard, though my conjugation skills are still weak. Now I'm still learning a good 250-500 words or month. I'm completely self taught, and the experience is so enjoyable. I know the rest of the grammar will do eventually. Success is absolutely about vocab, vocab, vocab. Learning a language does not have to be a chore! Make it fun, make it easy, ignore what's boring, and set out to impress no one but yourself.

    Du kannst es schaffen! 👍

  10. And here I was thinking he memorized an actual dictionary and not just a vocabulary book :p But still impressive!
