What mineral spirit has lowest voc?
Just an off hand comment about the Turner painting at 58:29 … A lot of people think that he exaggerated the sky colors in this and other paintings of the time, but this was after the Mount Tambora volcanic eruption of 1815 and sky's looked like this for periods of time. It is considered the largest eruption in recorded human history, led to extremely cold temperatures (The Year Without a Summer) and additionally led Mary Shelly to write the story of Frankenstein. ( Being stuck indoors all summer because the weather was so depressing and inhospitable) and her friend and contemporary, Lord Byron, wrote the poem "Darkness".
A suggestion: The final varnish should be a removable varnish… Then in the future the owner has the option to remove the top varnish and then re-varnish.
This is indeed GOLD information! I'll paint again with my oils, I fee now so bad for abandoning them for so long. I adore oils, I just do not have to paint in my room again with close windows 😀
There's no toxic waste disposal for households in my country, I think I'll have to ask someone at the art stores what I should do with everything before i start, thanks for this video
So I shouldn’t paint with terpentine? I’ll look into the Gamsol stuff. It’s been boiling outside (where I’ll be painting for ventilation) over here so I’ve been putting off trying oils. Everyone talks so highly of oils but they’re so hard to get into. Everything is a health hazard or might burn the place down or destroy the environment..
Would you recommend wearing a face mask or should painting outside be enough?
I didn’t know you had to be so careful about skin contact.. Thankfully I do have gloves.
For a palette, would a grey tile work? That’d basically be like using the glass, right?
As someone who gets impatient even waiting for acrylics to dry, it’s good to know about liquin.
I’ve been thinking of starting by following a Bob Ross tutorial just to get me used to using things. My understanding is his tutorials involve doing everything at once so maybe that’s a good way to get impatient me use to bigger brushes and using oil paint before trying longer projects with layers and all that.
Anyway, this was an extremely good and informative video. I’ve watched multiple videos about getting started with oils now and this one covers everything and it covers it all very well.
