Is it Worth Getting a PhD in TESOL | Applied Linguistics | Teaching ESL

BenTeachesEnglishOverseas

In my time teaching English abroad, I’ve known two people to pursue and receive PhDs in TESOL/Applied Linguistics. I’ve been asked several times if I plan to do the same and the honest answer is that I do not see the reward ratio to be there considering what it takes to achieve the doctorate. While I do have a master’s degree now, the reality is that I studied nothing even close to being related TESOL. In this video I discuss why for me it wasn’t worth the investment for me as an English teacher overseas to pursue a PhD related to teaching ESL.

  1. Hello Ben,

As always I enjoyed your video. I could not agree more with the advice you gave at the conclusion of this video. I have a BA in international relations. I love teaching ESL online. It is the greatest job in the world. Keep up your great work/videos!

    Thank you

  2. I know this is a bit of a side issue but I was wondering if there are many jobs at universities and/or international schools in Asia or elsewhere whereby a Master's Degree in International Relations would lead to opportunities in teaching?

  3. Hey I just came across your videos and they are really helpful. I was wondering, with a BA and a CELTA, what would be the best option for teaching English and working your way up the pay scale over, say, 5 years? Would a BA and a CELTA be enough to get the best jobs without having to get a Master's degree and so on?

I want to be making enough to save at least $2000 a month in the bank, with rent, food and other everyday expenses covered. Would I have to start out making less than that with a BA and CELTA but no previous experience? What would be your plan for the first 5 years starting from year 1, fresh out of university with a BA and a CELTA? Thank you.

  4. Hi Ben! Do you know if there are a lot of opportunities abroad for AMI Montessori teachers? Also what do you think about teacher ESL online through italki or making your own website? Do you know of people who have done this successfully? Thanks in advance and God bless!

  5. what about having a teaching qualification like a pgce? do we need that to teach kids in schools or would a celta and bachelors degree suffice?

  6. There are ways to do an ESL/Education PhD face-to-face, in a way that still allows you to work (wherever you're working) at a fairly reasonable price and with a pretty big advantage career-wise and salary-wise. But if you want that information, you have to search. It's totally doable, though.
