Jeremy Narby – Intelligence in Nature | Bioneers

Bioneers

In this mesmerizing talk, Jeremy Narby shares the findings from his groundbreaking book Intelligence in Nature. He describes his quest around the globe to chronicle how leading-edge scientists are studying intelligence in nature and how nature learns. He uncovers a universal thread of highly intelligent behavior within the natural world, and asks the question: What can humanity learn from nature’s economy and knowingness? Weaving together issues of animal cognition, evolutionary biology and psychology, he challenges contemporary scientific concepts and reveals a much deeper view of the nature of intelligence and of our kinship with all life.

This presentation took place at the 2005 National Bioneers Conference and is part of the Ecological Design, Vol. 1 and Nature, Culture and Spirit, Vol. 1 Collections.

Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world’s most pressing environmental and social challenges.

To experience talks like this, please join us at the Bioneers National Conference each October, and regional Bioneers Resilient Community Network gatherings held nationwide throughout the year.

  1. Fascinating. My current field of study is Industrial Design but it seems like I’m slowly drawn into learning about nature. So fascinating. Biomimicry for the win❤️

  2. Can I ask why we would trust the deliverances of an anthropologist on psychedelics for evidence from biology about intelligence in 'nature'? Would people have been as impressed if he then described eating a small child under the influence (PCP can "expand your consciousness" as well)? It is a dangerous thing to take LANGUAGE used to express concrete scientific ideas so seriously, as if metaphors of community, etc, were as empirically content-rich as the math, the measure we use to quantify changes in chemical composition, movement of molds through mazes, etc, etc. I have a totally open mind to intelligence in nature, really I do (love my Simon Conway Morris) – but it can't then bite down on something real if the people saying "everything is related!" don't define all three terms. Until then its a room full of people appreciating each others poetry and demanding human laws be based it, laws only humans get to vote on and follow (and how obedient have corporations and governments been to laws?…). And by poetry I mean the science and the cultural expression a small number of elite westerners in the latter case and a small number of elite animists use/d to navigate 'nature' to varying success.

  3. But aren't the bee and plant patterns defined? This would make it pre existing information like a computer program [except much more complex] that would call more to a programmer that caused the program to execute to happen if a sun is in view and collectable to the plant. considering this as well as the program to duplicate this to future plants continuing to plant 'programming' would not be applicable to the evolutionary view. an intelligent source would have to give this to the plant so that there would be more than just a seed shell.

  4. One of the best presentations on nature I have ever witnessed – just tremendous when you think about it (and that takes a while)…..

  5. I put my kettle on in the kitchen where I am watching this video and he raised his voice so I didnt have to turn the volume up. Fate. I had to hear what he said, 18th minute. Very strange and cool, funny too.

  6. So, what to eat then? No animals, no plants… Can I have some water please? NOOOOOO!!! 🙂 Seriously, this man has a point: why do we preserve intelligence for ourselves, while denying it for the very thing that 'produced' us: NATURE (some call it GOD, but that's merely another artificial distinction, as far as I can tell – the urge for answers seems to force us to cling to intellectual concepts, be it religious or scientific ones…).

  7. The most incredible phenomenon in this universe is- The Inter-dependent Multiplicity of Nature. It's the highest intelligence-because it is the only intelligence, that truly exists. We are a fragment of this intelligence.

  8. Mind consciousness gives us 5 sensations in the body. Heart consciousness we will receive what feels like 1000 receptors in the body that already 'know' everything, and the realization you are connected to everything, so you do not need to know a thing. you feel everything including people's emotions, thoughts and the beautiful feeling of absolute oneness. Only your mind needs to 'know' so to keep you away from being fully present, and so as to label and categorize the information. Everything exists on a vibrational level, and all is in the one space. Our consciousness level is the lowest and most dense as we seperate ourselves from everything around us, because of our fears, and also the taboo subject of death and thinking we only live once. This is completely incorrect as death does not exist, this is a cycle. Attachment to your individual self from programmed mind information as to whom you have associated yourself to become is purely fear based and is literally a living hell. It's a constant fight and struggle for life, when life is meant to be enjoyed and lived by each moment. Information from outside, is just that. constant seeking and needing to know. All answers lie within yourself, all information I speak of lies within yourself, you do not need to look anywhere except in your own bodily awareness/experience. A judgement, an expectation – what do you believe these to be, apart from learned behaviours from the experience you have received in this current life of yourself in time. Of course you've lived many times before, and will do so again, until you realize death does not exist in the sense to what you have come to 'learn'. After experiencing what I must term (from anothers experience) a Kundalini awakening during meditation practices, I have come to realize and perceive the ins and outs of reality, emotion, inter-connectedness, and our next stage of evolution. All is within you

  9. holy shit… as a historian I'm seeing in his research a trend in my own discipline… In which some of us are fighting for a new definition of nature which doesn't exclude humans or human creations. I loved this talk!
