Did Jesus baptize? The question is not an easy one to answer? Consider these three texts:
Mark 1:1-8: “I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
John 3:22-23: “After this Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea, where he spent some time with them baptizing.”
John 4:1-3: “Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, just his disciples), he left Judea and returned to Galilee.”
Lectionary Readings: Isaiah 40:1-11, 2 Peter 3:8-15a, Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13, Mark 1:1-8
By the way, before you dismiss as “yukky” some of my re-framing of John the Dipper diet, consider this: as of 2020, eighty percent of the world’s nations eat insects of 1,000 to 2,000 species. That’s at least 2 billion people or almost 1/3 of the Earth’s population.

In fact, the wealthy were some of the gourmands of insects. Pliny, the first-century Roman scholar and author of Historia Naturalis, wrote that Roman aristocrats loved to eat beetle larvae reared on flour and wine. Aristotle, the fourth-century Greek philosopher, described in his writings the ideal time to harvest cicadas: “The larva of the cicada on attaining full size in the ground becomes a nymph; then it tastes best, before the husk is broken. At first the males are better to eat, but after copulation the females, which are then full of white eggs.” Today you can buy mealworm burgers in Germany, agave worm tortillas in Mexico or agave worms placed in bottles of mezcal liquor throughout Central America. In Israel and throughout the Middle East, grasshoppers and locusts are the only halal insect in local diets.
