  1. The case against science is simple: Science has no conscience and it hypotheses are based on facts that are subject to constant revision, therefore it is destined to remain perpetually tentative and cannot possibly have any lasting or reliable moral value.
The case against reason is even more so: Using reason and a limited set of facts, it is easy to argue that The Crusades, The Inquisition, Islamic Holy Wars, The Holocaust, the oppression of Palestinians, ad infinitum, are all perfectly acceptable.
Humanism? Since none of us can agree on what it means to be "truly" human, it is impossible to prove that humanism is even a "thing", much less a reliable path forward.
Progress? That depends on whether or not one considers the unnecessary deaths of around a quarter of billion people at the hands of evil men in the 20th Century–aided by their reasonable and scientific cohorts–to be a giant leap forward or back, for mankind.
There will be a way forward, though, and it might even lead to better things, but if so, it seems likely that we must go "off the rails" of belief in the "isms" we've been clinging to for the past few millennia.

  2. Yes, Jordan, let me repeat that again: "DATA DRIVEN". Please remember that next time you talk about "architypes" or make ridiculous implications such as without religion there wouldn't be enlightenment. Yes of course, burning people at the stake for their radical claims is how you promote new ideas.

  3. I'm just wondering, you're saying things are getting better? So how do you explain the Chinese preying on elephants, slaughtering sharks at a rate of 270 million a year. Which will cause extinction in as little as 5 years. So with apex predators on the brink of extinction, how is this better? As you know we need our apex predators, and if we lose them, there will be a domino effect in our oceans. If we lose our coral reefs, we lose our oxygen. So how can this be getting better? I've been involved in saving animals for decades, and the animals are losing. Seen as how most people annoy the hell out of me, I worry about our animals world-wide. I'm not religious, and it's a good thing, because any omnipotent being is a joke, look at our hostile environment, it's no Eden that's for sure. I'm glad you think things are getting better, as far as I can tell, the animals are losing, big time. So enjoy your slaps on the back to one another, cus I think you're both, barking mad. Richard Dawkins saying.

  4. Pinker is the good new bearer. Jordan show us the bad stuff.

Pinker: "There is 'The Force' within each of us"
Peterson: "Beware of the Dark Side"

  5. Whatever may be your sociological, political and economic views of our realities for me these two amazingingly educated men stand tall in the bulwarks of human intellect. Interestingly both are of Canadian origin which brings to mind the cliched correlation of causation conclusion that there must be something in Canadian drinking water 🙂

  6. no no NO, this wishful "ooo everything's fine" Russia and Ukraine might go to war,Iran and Israel might go to war,China has a social credit system,Europe is a caliphate and we are at a crossroads and humanity will go INTERSTELLAR, peterson and his handler will be left BEHIND!

  7. Steven Pinker is a sociopath and my book lays out the case for why… I’m thorough. Until you read it don’t even both replying to me with your objection. You don’t know what you’re even objecting to… I use math/physics/logic to show his obsession with violence reduction is all wrong. Ontologically wrong.

  8. Life expectancy is declining in US. Pinker has no clue why. He has ignored the stark examples of Ceaușescu’s Romania using “science” to provide only warmth/sustenance to babies (not touch/love) that led to the killing of these babies. He can’t see obvious parallels to humans who live in a “rational” society that doesn’t give people enough fraternity/love and instead just throws money/material objects at us like Romania only gave material sustenance to babies. But despite our “wealth” we now see life expectancy is down! Pinker is not just obtuse he’s a sociopath. He doesn’t care about those who suffer under modernity. Peterson is almost as clueless. War is coming. You cannot treat people like objects (like capitalism/socialism both do) and get away with it indefinitely. People rebel first by suicide then by war… this is an apolitical criticism. sanction the book dot com

  9. Just two psychologists, one clinical, one cognitive discussing the real world and having a real discussion. Amazing that it took us this long to get to facts instead of jabs. Go watch Howard Dean try to politicize James Damore and Pinker make him look stupid.

  10. Genetics explains the reduction in homocide/violence because genetic drift happens when rule of law is applied (for instance capital punishment). If he doesn't know this, then he is an idiot: it takes a genius to find a complex explanation vast enough to completely hide an obvious, measurable, and well-known fact. You can throw everything pinkus has written in the trash.

  11. Great conversation! I have much respect for and follow both Jordan Peterson and Steven Pinker. And although I find it interesting to understand the overlap between character traits and ideology, what has been irritating to me about Peterson lately is his increasing tendency to politicise things and I really find it undermines a lot of the interesting things he reveals. I do see simultaneously that this has a positive side: It opens conservatives up to new ideas and exposes hypocrisy in some of the lefts openness. And sure, polarisation brings a discussion into the foreground, which is another benefit in a sense.. But I would much prefer to concentrate on the main message in this talk, which is to build a focus on the positive developments in the world and Steven Pinkers closing words at 1:03:29, encouraging us to transcend political divisions and depoliticise our shared societal problems in order to find working solutions instead of stroking our own egos. one love.

  12. I don’t buy this statistics that homicide rate is better. Look, if population increases and the number of deaths does not increases proportionally does that mean that violence has diminished? The per 100k rate was reduced or we could say that the percentage diminished, but the number of homicides did grow, only that population outnumbered homicide capacity a little.
