Learning to Draw Manga with Cognitive Drawing – Homeschool Art

Jason Brubaker

I’ve never tried to draw the manga style and so in this video I give a demo of how I use the Cognitive Drawing method to quickly learn and memorize a style. This is the way I learned how to draw specific styles back when I was trying to break into the comic industry.

  1. I'm really surprised this video or concept isn't more popular, thanks for sharing this. It's like studying for something, taking the test right after, and then studying again then repeating that same process over and over and it really helps. Also I love FLCL ❤️

  2. Thanks for sharing, Jason. I'm already working the workbook and seeing you struggle, especially on the first drawing, is actually helpful! But I'm curious: Are there pros and cons to doing the first drawing from memory vs. starting with reference? If you started with reference, does that dilute the technique in any way? Have you ever tested the two approaches with students and compared the results? Ahem, because personally I would like to skip my first extra crappy drawing from memory. 🙂

  3. Some analysis you may have missed: She's gazing to the right, which makes the nose poke out further to the right. As a result, the mouth will tuck in a bit more to our right… even though you don't see the nose, you should be able to feel the form. I think you were putting the mouth too far to the left.

  4. The bridge between study drawing and drawing from imagination IS Memory Drawing. But you need good analysis. I've been working on my own version of this type of learning for a little while now and it is going well. What I find works is a time limit. 10 minutes for a copy drawing doing analysis. 10 minutes pure memory drawing. Then 10 minutes of "cheating"… you can cheat if you want to, but draw it without looking at the reference as much as possible. 30 minutes total per subject.

  5. Such a good way to practice; i can already feel my mind working and I'm not even the one drawing!

One way to go deeper would be, in one session, focus on the proportion and construction lines. Next session focus on light and shadow distribution. Session after that focus on line flow, texture, and shape while going detailed.

Challenge mode: draw Junji Ito or Berserk. Detail overload. Have fun.

  6. Though not a Manga fan myself, I found it fascinating how you did this! I will be buying your book for my daughter (in art school now) and will probably get my OWN copy in case someone wants me to mimic another style for a project. This will come in handy. Thank you!
PS. I just got vol. 1 of Flight in the mail. I'm excited to start tonight!

  7. Jason has left western comics and join the WEEB MANGA NATIONNNNN…..RIP Jason West Comics….HELLO Jason WEEB Manga XDD hahaha.

not sure once you finished the cognitive drawing that you might do a similar lesson plan with certain popular art styles.
