Lecture by Lois Weinthal

Presented by the Interior Design Program as part of the college’s Interior Design Lecture Series at California College of the Arts, this lecture was filmed on Monday, November 11, 2013, in Timken Lecture Hall on the college’s San Francisco campus.

Lois Weinthal is chair of the School of Interior Design at Ryerson University in Toronto. Her research and practice investigate the relationship between architecture, interiors, clothing, and objects, resulting in works that take on an experimental nature.

She is the editor of Toward a New Interior: An Anthology of Interior Design Theory and coeditor of After Taste: Expanded Practice in Interior Design, both published by Princeton Architectural Press. These publications address the interdisciplinary nature of interiors and the tangent disciplines that affect and inform it.

Weinthal has received grants from the Graham Foundation, Fulbright, and DAAD, and has exhibited and lectured nationally and internationally.

Her CCA lecture will be titled “Toward a New Interior”:

Interior design is a relatively young discipline in both the professional and the academic realms. As a result, it has taken time for the discipline to craft its own history, practice, and identity. This lecture frames the interior as an interdisciplinary realm through a range of scales, from the clothing we wear to the cities we inhabit. Between these scales is an array of layers that can be pulled apart and further investigated, often revealing an identity by which we surround ourselves.

From clothing to the closet to the concept of domesticity, interior design can be seen as the stage set by which we act out our lives as we move fluidly between these layers. Examples of works that are interdisciplinary and tangent to interiors will be highlighted, along with works from a design studio that specifically address interpretations of interior skins.

The 2013-14 Interior Design Lecture Series is funded by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and CCA’s Graduate Program in Visual and Critical Studies.
