Legged Robot Testing in Desert

BostonDynamics

Legged Squad Support System (LS3) is a four-legged robot designed to travel 20 miles on rough terrain carrying 400 lbs of load. The video shows field testing at Twentynine Palms, CA. Testing includes rough-terrain mobility, endurance, visually guided following, GPS guided maneuver, and overall reliability. LS3 is being developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from DARPA and the US Marine Corps. For more information visit our website at www.BostonDynamics.com.

  1. It'd be awesome if you could test your cheetah robot out in the desert. I'd love to see it in the open and off the treadmill.

  2. So why no saddle on top? Feels like wasted potential here. Ok maybe you wouldn't use a supply carrying robot as a horse… BUT… you could technically strap a wounded person that can't walk on it?

  3. Cheaper to breed, genetically engineer and then train super donkeys, fit them with biomechanical suits for extra strength and endurance.
    Much cheaper.

  4. This LS3 could replace (and save the lives of) living beasts of burden. That's an advance right there. They could also be raced and ridden. The Spot Mini is so agile it could perform equestrian dressage moves. Pretty dang cool.
