  1. Thank you for the video, very interesting! Surrealism is also my favorite movement, and while I've read some surrealist works, I'm more familiar with paintings. I will definitely check out your recommendations, but I wish I understood French better to read surrealist poems straight from the source, without translation. It will be a completely different poem in Russian or English, that's for sure 🙂 I like that surrealism is so elusive, just like our mind when we go to sleep and have dreams… You really have to feel it and be more abstract with your thinking to "understand" it, as it comes from such a subconscious place. I would love to hear more from you on this topic and about Dada, as well. Take care!

  2. Thanks for this video! Surrealism is surprisingly underrepresented on YouTube, especially the literary kind. You seem to have a lot to say about this topic, so please make all the sequels that you want!
I like Breton and Eluard very much. English translations of Aragon are harder to find, so I guess I'll need to learn French to read him. ☺

Can you recommend any women surrealist writers? Most female surrealists that I've heard of are painters. The only writers who come to mind are Anais Nin and Djuna Barnes.

  3. Could you maybe suggest some works about surrealism that focus on politics? (for example you mentioned surrealism and communism) Also do you know perhaps some surrealist painters?
Loved the video and hope you make more lit' chats! 🙂

  4. Hoping this is the first of many videos on the subject!! I would love to know about the distinguishment between Dadaism and Surrealism! And /of course/ I am interested in Japanese Surrealism so I would love to hear about what you've been uncovering for your thesis in that respect!!!! 🙂

  5. I have not read much surrealism but I do love the art and literary works of the great female exponent of the movement Leonora Carrington her work is so personal, magical, creepy and it impacts you in a subconscious level!!..
Leave you a link of one of her stories and artwork hope you enjoy them , I guess if you are doing a masters degree on surrealism you are familiar with her yet I wanted to share I really admire her deeply:

  6. I really like how you talk about so many absolutely different subjects in such a personal way. Could you recommend a french surrealist film? I've seen Orphée as a teenager, impressive. I'd like to see more.

  7. Would like to watch more more about surrealism. Really interested in this topic. I have read "Nadya" by Andre Breton. I like a book "In watermelon sugar" by American contrcultural writer from 60-s – Richard Brautigan. And I think that another American writer William Seward Burroughs is close to surrealism style while he used his "cut-up technique" for writing. And surrealism is very suitable style for visual arts, and now it's so popular. It's huge topic for discussion.

  8. ooh please make those sequels about surrealism! i learned about dada and other art movements in secondary school but it was nowhere near as interesting as you make this sound. i love how knowledgeable and passionate you are! xo

  9. I've seen exhibitions of surrealist art.I really can't imagine what literature would be like. Does it not seem odd having a revolution against 'order' but also have leaders and rules? How do you explain that contradiction?

  10. J'me posais une question: Est-ce qu'on peut considérer les œuvres de Miyazaki comme du surréalisme ? Par exemple son fameux "Le Voyage de Chihiro". Ou est-ce que c'est juste du fantastique ?

  11. Can you explain the type of writing style that characterises surrealism? Specific techniques, tone, specific examples and how surrealism could achieve more because why etc. I love this video. Please do another if you can! 🙂

  12. I don't think France has produced anything of quality since ww1. This includes all the arts, sorry you we're born in a ghost country that thinks its still alive and relevant.

  13. Earlier this year "The Arthritic Grasshopper: Collected Stories, 1934-1944" by Gisèle Prassinos was released by the great Wakefield Press.

  14. Je trouve ça vraiment très intéressant, j'ai regardé plusieurs de tes vidéos à ce sujet, mais comptes-tu faire plus de vidéos sur le surréalisme? Ce serait vraiment génial 🙂

  15. I had to write a blog post for honors lit comparing the use of surrealism in two authors' works. This really helped me pick out the examples I needed. Thank you!

  16. Recently started getting interested in surrealism so this video is really helpful. I've never been into poetry, you could say I even hated reading it as I never understood it and as an amateur fiction writer I wasnt good at creating poems in school. But I stumbled across a poem by Desnos that really struck to me – although with a very different and personal interpretation. Its called in English "I've Dreamed Of You So Much". Now I borrowed "Liberty or Love", there was one book by Aragon I found interesting but sadly there is no English translation, so will check out other authors. Any tips on reading/understanding surrealism would be helpful:)

  17. I wish someone could tell me more about Japanese and Korean surrealism… Anyone that can suggest to me something helpful here?
