Near-Death Experiences (NDEs), Consciousness & Reality

SelfConsciousMind

We summarize the main results from our past 15 years of research in NDE phenomena. Our two main hypotheses are the mind-entity hypothesis and the transcendent realm hypothesis. First, the human being is a nonmaterial transcendent entity united with the physical brain and body. The mind-entity is the seat of consciousness of the person, the essence of the person, which separates from the physical body during an NDE and exists independently. In ordinary consciousness, the mind-entity interfaces and interacts directly with the brain to produce conscious awareness. NDE phenomena suggest there is a new subtle physical force involved in mind-matter interactions and that direct interaction of the mind with neurons occurs. In our proposed mind-brain mechanism, the mind interacts with brain neurons both to “sense” neural activations and to induce neural activations. We propose a specific mechanism to bring sensations and thoughts to conscious awareness.

The second hypothesis is that reality consists of the physical realm plus a more fundamental transcendent realm. NDErs report hyperreal experiences with veridical perceptions in both the physical realm and the higher, supersensible realm. NDE phenomena imply that there is a fifth spatial dimension to reality and that subsumes all of physical reality and includes all of the apparently unlimited transcendent, nonmaterial reality. The physical realm is coextensive with and dependent on the transcendent realm.
