ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, social commentator, and political activist. He is among the most cited scholars in the world and is the author of many books, including Syntactic Structures and Manufacturing Consent.
He is currently the Laureate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Arizona and an Institute Professor at MIT.
ABOUT THE CAMBRIDGE UNION: From its small beginnings as a debating society, the Cambridge Union is the oldest debating society in the world and the largest student society in Cambridge. The Union remains a unique forum for the free exchange of ideas and the art of public debate. .
Noam Chomsky – the father of modern linguistics, a brave and courageous political activist — but when I asked him if he knew the name of the Boston Red Sox player who back in the 1960s left the team bus with Gene Conley and on a whim they both took off for Israel … he never responded.
Other than that, he's perfect. … Noam Chomsky, I mean. … Gene Conley couldn't throw a curve ball for shit.
.
Amazing. What a source of knowledge.
This is very pro institution They all mean very well, and the debate on corona virus was superb, but. And how could anyone say anything of trump that is not about theatre. Or even promote any of the U.S. presidents, their administration, or any administration. Corporations corporations. That and their advertisers. Hypnotic. But at the same time the truly smart guys will win us all, and are winning, a perfection.
But the Democratic Party is a better one 😂😂😂
Leftists are blind to their authoritarian regimes around the world.
Trump was elected.

For all those who are fascinated and inspired by this great old man; do not stop at that. A C T. Don't just share the video online. Instead, do get involved where you can. That is the message of the interview. No one will stand up for you. Everyone has to stand up for themselves.
There will be no regime or political system change without blood on the streets. Fascism and communism were reactionary movements against the rich supported by the poor and uneducated. 90% of the population still lives in ignorance and fear. This place will always be the way it has always been, sweeps and tigers with some idealists in-between. We are limited by our egos, our desires for more hence in any political system or school of thought greed and desire for domination will arise. Its nice to listen to Mr. Chomsky talking about all of the suffering various political systems have created throughout the world and share his hope for a better future but allow me to sound pessimistic here. There is no great future for humanity, homo sapiens or humans lying ahead in the form of a fair and equitable way of living. We've already reached the top. Live your life the way you want it enjoy it and don't fall for the lie that you should sacrifice yourself for a better future for the generations to come. Others have hoped too and by the looks of it life is still a struggle. Embrace it and in your endeavour have consideration for other beings which share this planet. Be the change in your small world and be an example to be followed, and everyone else they should lead by example because if there is one thing that is going to "save us" that thing is absolute individuality melted in total unity. Only when each and every one of us will become a leader we will have hopes that we can give birth to fellow humans that will have the privilege to witness this miraculous mysterious existence we have witnessed for short time.
We the humans of this planet don't need another political system or to replace the "bad people" that exploit us. We humans need to come back to our senses everything else will fall into place. Ego is the main challenge of this species, not Trump, Putin, political system, dictators, demagogs or greedy capitalists. You know why religious beliefs have been so instrumental on the stability of societies? It's because they kept the ego in check without the need of a maze of laws and regulations however in our modern societies ego is not a problem on the agenda. Especially in capitalism ego is king. It's as though the whole society obeys to this invisible guy called . .I.
Always clear and direct. Thank you Professor Chomsky.
do you think that its possible to establish a workable Anarhist sistem after this forced time off period that gave people time to rethink about basics
He's managed to turn an outbreak caused by CCP arrogance into an attack on NeoLiberalism. Shock. He attacks the US/UK and Thatcher/Reagan as if they're the root cause of the lack of solution to this virus. Does he forget that the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th biggest economies (China, Japan, Gr, Fr) don't operate under the same supposed NeoLiberal sphere? Why does he not focus on them? Because they don't fit his narrative. I don't suggest his attacks on Corporate Neoliberalism are incorrect, however there's a time and a place for them. This virus isn't widespread because Trump defunded the CDC, the virus is widespread because of gross negligence of the CCP. 'The US was uniquely vulnerable' he says. Per capita the US is doing fine and China's stats mean didly squat. Belgium, Spain and Italy have all done worse than Britain per capita. There's plenty of truth to Chomsky's criticism, he's just slightly absorbed by turning everything into an attack on Br/US neoliberalism.
Fruitcake.
I don't really understand why the title says "Father of Modern Linguistics". This is accurate, but gives a false impression of what the interview is about, it's all about politics and there's not a single linguistics question!
He's not the father of modern linguistics, Saussure was but theoretical linguistics like Chomsky's is full of holes. Hype and nothing else.
Did anyone understand what he said here: 24:54 ? "[…] the interests of power and profit will create the ???"
Chomsky: way out of human annihilation
Interviewer: Interesting

Wow, just wow. …Prof. Chomsky's takes on a series of these topics are some of his most important & most cogent that I've heard in years. …He's still crushing it and showing us the nature of the struggle we have ahead. If we accept the challenge and have the courage to face facts, to unify and to work towards real progress we can achieve it. Let's frickin' go people!
"…There can be change again, but not if you sit there obedient and acquiescent. In a free society, acquiescence equals support." (@1:10:25)
His Macbook still hasn’t moved since his previous webinars last month 😂 Noam is a hero
He is the only person to wich I wish eternal life

8:38 for the start.
Terrible intro.
I wouldn't have predicted the extreme savagery of the neoliberal period. That was a surprise.
He always belts out a good sentence like this.
Germany has recieved Covid patients from Italy.
Read Lenin's State & Revolution. Only revolution can save our species.
Audio isn't working.
12:08 since when is climate change a "tail risk"?! It's a certainty! It's already happening. And CENTRAL projections show it being utterly catastrophic. If it was a mere tail risk then Chomsky wouldn't be citing it as his first and most important concern.
Can you smart kids and Chomsky fanboys help me out here?
Chomsky can be accepted as an intellectual on account of the books he has written. There is little doubt that some of his criticisms of the economic and political environment have merit.
Where he fails is on the presentation of credible alternatives, and without credible alternatives such intellectual are little more than professional complainers. Sure, we will listen on occasion but only fanatics would act on utopian mumblings.
Apparently Chomsky identifies as a "libertarian socialist" or an "anarcho-communist". I am a simple man and "libertarian" seems contradictory to "socialist" and "anarchy" seems contradictory to "communism". (though anarchy has proved to be a regular blood bath on the way to communism.
So clever people; What does Chomsky actually mean in practical terms ?
One has to assume that Chomsky is not a complete idiot and that there is something in this world to showcase the ideal society that he would like to build (or impose?)
After some thought the only half example I can think of is the Kibbutz system in Israel.
Is this what he means? ….or something else?
i dont like how often he keeps talking about nuclear war
Right, here’s the exception of the saying that anyone can be replaced.
free helicopter rides everybody !!!!!!!
Interesting what happens when you dont have all the facts
Its sad that he has aged so much in the last year. This shows you can keep your brain functioning at such an age if you use it.
Professor Noam Chomsky,
I wish to express to you my gratitude for sharing your knowledge with the world.
All my respects to you
Sir Noam Chomsky.
At 91 Chomsky Rocks.
Yet he says Asia had under control.. Not when we see India, today, with 800,000 cases and thousands and thousand dead.
47.00 The anti-semitism issue may have been a good and big news story, but was nowhere on the electorate's radar.
Despite the strong showing for Labour in 2017 (they came from nowhere to narrowly missing a win) some traditional Labour stronghold seats were lost to the Tories. In 2017 Labour did well among students and young urban middle class left, but support was starting to slip among the northern working class. The issue was not any of Labour's policies as such, but Labour's failure to support their natural constituency; the working class, and their decision in the EU Referendum, which had been to Leave.
By the 2019 Gen Election, Corbyn had tried to take both sides and pleased neither, and nor had he addressed the one and only reason why the working class voted Leave which was not race, but the free-movement of people in the EU. There had been consequent unemployment in the UK among the semi-skilled and unskilled workforce, such jobs(it was felt) having been overrun by amiable aliens. Corbyn never resolved the conflict of mindset between the middle-class Labour "Left" and the real working class Labour Left, whose imperatives are quite different. So in December 2019 he did reasonably well in middle-class leftist areas, but managed to lose Labour most of their natural power base in the north, their worst showing since I believe 1935
