The Regionalists of the 1930s, Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, John Steuart Curry of Kansas, and Grant Wood of Iowa, were the first recognized group of leading American painters born west of the Mississippi.

This was Benton’s first lithograph and Benton wrote that it resulted from a 1926 trip by Model T Ford from Springfield, Missouri to Taos, New Mexico.

“Lithography is a medium particularly appropriate to [Benton’s] highly individual style, and whether he has shown us Oklahoma or not, it is certain that he has shown us Benton.” — Elizabeth Luther Carey, 1930
