Chris Stuckmann, as well as some respected guests, discuss the art of film criticism, how to get started, the difference between print and video, and most of all, why we love movies.

29:47 I get that alot too. I can relate to looking up a critics review of something I love and I see the negatives why people hate it, especially a movie that's poorly made, it rubs me the wrong way making me believe that the people who hate it are right and I'm wrong. It's happened to me alot like the fantastic 4 movies (2005-2007) And Man of Steel.
Great video. Now I love movies but don't really review or criticise them like most others.
I dont show my face or talk and just do slide shows and top 10s.
So I'm wondering, have you any tips on how I can take the channel forward. Should I do reviews and be on camera?
Thanks
Critics are whiny people and you're especially whiny. Movies are entertainment and everyone likes something different. Otherwise we wouldn't bother making anything we hated. At a certain point you need to let it go.
Am I the only one who actually watches movie reviews only after watching the movie itself đ
Great video Chris! Legendary cast in this video
I canât believe it took me 6 years to watch this video once I found out Jeremy Jahns was in it. Jeremy is my favorite reviewer and Chris, youâre a close second. I watch yours and Jeremyâs reviews just to hear you talk about my favorite movies with such passion. Iâve only disagreed with Jeremy on ONE thing (which was he thought Stranger Things season 3 was weak whereas I thought it was the best season). Thank you guys for giving me excitement when I see you put up a new video!
Hey, whatâs up
đ
Great content. Love to see another Cleveland/Akron native talking intelligently about the film medium!

Make a full online course on film criticism.
John looks like heâs about to explode
I guess Malone isn't making reviews anymore, just tried to find her and couldn't find much other than old streams. đ
I can appreciate your reviews on movies because you speak with reserve and you make it a point not give anything away. I will say that some of your reviews have made me change my mind about going to see a film I thought would be not to my liking. I'd like to say thank you for that. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next one. â¤ââđž
I've only just come across this video and it is so helpful and interesting – thank you!
I like how he explains that different movies can have the same grade without being of the same caliber. I gave Ferris Buellers Day Off and Saving Private Ryan the same grade. Those two movies can not even be compared. The former is for pure entertainment the latter is commenting on one of, if not the, most serious and complex events in human history and comments on humanity as a whole. These two movies serve completely different purposes, but both fulfilling their purpose to the highest potential. Ferris Buellerâs Day Off is a hilarious, feel good movie that can turn anyoneâs day around. Saving Private Ryan can change the way someone views the world. You can not compare ditching school to storming the beaches of Normandy. Both were 10s. Some 10s are bigger than others.
Trying to start a film critic youtube series and this was very enlightening. Struggling with finding the right tone and my voice in all this. Thank you for your tips!!
Thanks, Chris. You're an excellently genuine dude.
I literally jumped out of my seat in excitement when i saw my boy Jeremy Jahns pop up on the screen
I think this is a great video and everyone who has an opinion on films should watch this. However, I do disagree with giving two films from different genres the same grade, despite one being a lot better than the other. I think reviewing a film within its genre is too restrictive. Genres are just a part of a film for me, not the film in its entirety. When I review a film, I review it as a film, not as a comedy, sci-fi, rom-com, etc. Plus, many films do not clearly fit into one genre, so reviewing it within its genre is not showing all the aspects of the film. So if I gave Don Jon an A+ score and The Dark Knight an A+ score, I would think the quality of the films are the same or extremely similar, regardless of their genres. I don't think there should be a big gap between two films that have the same score because they are in different genres. Besides, there could be a rom-com that you think is genuinely as good as The Dark Knight, which makes Don Jon's A+ score unreliable.
When Roger Ebert reviewed silent Night deadly night, he Wasn,t very cynical.
hehehe Chris Stuckmann
's head on a blue stick ;0)
Holy shit. Had no idea one of the best youtubers was on this channel. GOoooooooooooooo tigers!
No love for Jay Sherman? IT STINKS
I freaked out when I saw Pretty Much It!!! Woohoo!!!! I had no idea they existed till YouTube finally added it to my suggestions in 2018. And I watch every video from. You them and flick pick! đđđ
I watched this to try to see if I could improve my Letterboxd reviews, and I already did the things you listed. So I guess for once I did something well.
Great Video, and i really enjoy your reviews. I also do audio reviews for a podcast. we recently discussed intrige / j´accuse by roman polanski (which i think didn´t have a release in the us?). beforehand we had an internal discussion if we should discuss it and if you can truly seperate the art and the artist. i think you can to a certain degree. i was pro- discussing it, but i´m not 100% on your side when saying current events or zeitgeist regarding the movie, the circumstances surrounding the making of it and the people making it should or has to be completely left out and not be discussed.
but anyways, thanks for this interesting video and i ´ll keep enjoying your reviews! greetings from munich/germany
I usually hate critics but now I get a new view of critics ( in a positive way),but I still hate yms YouTube channel
When directors and actors commit crimes of abuse it should be known and not shoved under the rug and silenced and enabled!
Chris I hope you know one main difference between you and those great critics you featured in this video is your demeanor and the way you talked, you donât rush your words and speak in a calm and collect manner, some of those guys have great points but they speak almost like they are in a tongue twister competitions, and after a couple of minutes it start to hurt the ears.
With the exception of Alicia Malone and Scott Wentz none of the other âcriticsâ seem worth listening to. If your job is to review movies you should have a higher level of literacy with the medium than the average filmgoer. So I donât want to hear a critic say that âIâm just like any other movie goerâ
I like all these guys but oh how i love chris and Jeremy
Whenever I'm telling someone my opinion on a film, I make it clear it was just what I thought. My preferences are different from others, and while I may not personally have liked a movie, that doesn't mean anything.
How did you learn how to Critic movies, you studied cinema/film before that?
I don't know about you, but I'm so inspired to make a movie review on YouTube because of Chris Stuckmann
yt
I really appreciate when a reviewer can offer a viewpoint on the many aspects of a film, not just a blanket statement of âthis rocksâ or âthis sucksâ. It shows a great respect for the effort those who worked on the film as well as a respect for the audience. And I also enjoy when I can receive more information regarding filmmaking while watching a review. It shows that the reviewer is knowledgeable and actually likes film. It also helps to understand the reviewerâs particular standpoint. This is why I knew instantly that I wanted to tune in to your channel. You are very competent reviewer and very enjoyable to watch!
If YouTube comments sections are anything to go by, youâre still working for handicapped children
It's better you leave film criticism or you will be thrown out.
I would approach the strengths of each medium. A written view offers the opportunity to tell an elaborate, immersive story. A video review offers the chance to express a review as a showpiece with an energetic, more emotionale tone.
Super insightful!! Thanks for talking about this. I've always considered doing movie reviews but I've always felt that people wouldn't care about my "non professional film critic opinion."
Donât be that 200th dislike

Mr. Stuckmann, you've become a part of a bigger universe. You just don't kn– Oh wait. Yeah, nevermind.
coming back in 2019 man this was really helpful. im trying to improve my channel and my reviews. đ
Siskel and Ebert… man, I really miss them.
loved those dudes
How come you didn't review canal street the movie ?
Is that Gabe from Gameranx?!
