  1. This is the first time seeing Joe having a hard time to understand why he thinks consciousness is more important than mathematics😅 and here is the reason why…. if you are not conscious you are not going to be able to do mathematics, thats so simple to understand

  2. This the easiest way to explain our “reality” is what you can perceive and understand in your brain everything you’ve ever experienced wasn’t experienced by your eyes it’s always been your brains your body is just like a telescope trying to take in what it’s experiencing and convert that to electrical signals through your brain everyday the light wakes you up right? Guess what your eyes experience the bight and that experience literally wake you up not the light the signal from your sense of sight is what told your brain to wake up. Your senses are your reality and your brain is the observer or as some would say the soul I will do my best to spread this even thoe it may turn into something bigger I just want people to understand why the social media the material the wealth all distracts you it’s just a bell for your senses but if you die without reaching a higher understanding you really just wasted your whole human experience good l

  3. Qualities can be measured by mathematical models, however never explained by them. Granted sensations have a material element or partly cause the sensations themselves nevertheless it is self evident that sensation, perception and consciousness are more than pure matter.

  4. It’s so annoying how they can not speak each other’s language to make it click, they never had that “OOOOOH” moment, all he had to say was if human consciousness did not exist then how would you know red is red or if a food is spicy. That’s basically what philosophers realized

  5. It blows my mind we depict life & the way it should be based on people from so long ago.its time we decide our fate and live the way we see life.enough with the past its time to move forward.

  6. If anyone is interested in this topic buts finds this guy a bit uninformative I would recommend you to watch lex Fridmen’s podcast with Donald Hoffman…he seems to go into deeper detail on how this is possible. Very interesting stuff. Name of episode is reality is a illusion

  7. Joe is right. BUT so is the other guy. You need this specific type of physical, 3D, material existence to experience this specific type of spiritual, soul, etc life. If that doesn’t make sense or you disagree please comment so I can use better terminology.

  8. We don’t need know, we just need to understand reality. You might not be able experience color but you can create or whatever.
*Im using the words “understand” and “know” really loosely

  9. Poor Joe. How could he not follow the logic? Goff said that before the scientific revolution, people thought secondary qualities were out in nature, but Galileo said they were subjective, not primary, and part of an individual's experience. Science sought to focus on objective reality, not subjective experience, which is what consciousness is, thus science ignored subjectivity because more fundamentally it was ignoring consciousness as a subject of study

  10. I always thought Joe was a super smart guy but this clip destroyed that belief. I hope he was extremely stoned during this episode.

  11. I think the question Joe needs to ponder is, how do simply material (unconscious) chemicals and their materialistic reactions with each other in a collection of material (unconscious) neurons miraculously give rise to any kind of conscious experience?

  12. Joe gives him the best example of why “panpsychism” is total garbage! This is how we know we are fishing for absolute nonsense!

Guest: everything you feel, hear, touch, smell and taste is all made up from the conscience
JR: Tell that to my mouth when I eat spicy foods!

There’s a chemical breakdown of why that happens. Spicy foods doesn’t stop existing once it enters into the conscience realm of your mind!

  13. But quantitative reality is also conscious, and forms consciousness. Thinking in number and word are simultaneous child development processes. Consciousness is both qualitative and quantitative. This is one of Kant's central claims- 150 years after Galileo in 1780s. Most of these questions are answered in kant's 'critique of pure reason'.

  14. Just saw Goff on CapturingChristianity the other day. It was a much better dialogue since he was discussing this with a person who is much better equipped for the subject, that is, Cameron Bertuzzi.

  15. Could it be possible, that you are describing 2 ways to view the world.
    1. The mathmatical view, so that you see the world with experiences you have gathered, through the educational system embarked by Galileo.

For example you look at a hammer, you know that with that hammer, you can get nails to stick to the wall, because you have gathered the mathmatical experience, to know the formula of force is responsible.

    2. The existential view, which is the way you talk, about the information, that you have gathered from Galileo's system and the information, of what the resolving body sensation would be.

For example you would teach your daughter, how to use a hammer and you say 'don't hit your finger with it or else it will hurt really bad.' she will still not know the body sensation of 'really hurt' through mathmatical information, if you however tap her on the hand lightly and then gradually harder. You can get her to understand the rising alarming sensations in her body resulting in her receiving the information she needs to watch out not to hit her hand, by sharing the existential knowledge.

To add from myself I believe that this distinct difference is also the reason children and people on drugs see the world differently. They go through the house scream and draw on the walls, because it was fun and exciting, they feel ecstatic. A lot of parents would shout at them, which leads to a feeling of guilt and unhappiness. With the information of existing in that exact moment feeling those emotion effected by all the different factors of perception she now knows it makes up a memory, that if she draws on the walls and runs screaming through the house. She will get scold and then in her mind goes over to valuing, which sensation is stronger over all waying her options and judge, based on the both kinds of information she now has.

As of right now we can not transfer this existential information, but as you have said, we have come very far by mostly figuring out the mathmatical side of science, so you can trust your better judgment. Not to eat a Carolina reaper or else you could faint, since that's the warnings we have made based on chemical reaction(mathmatical) the memory of your bodies sensation of heat (existential).

thank you for reading Joe , wish you all the wisdom and joy you can imagine, since that's what I received from you. Also thank you Philip for the great wisdom.

  16. Prof Goff would have failed my Physical Science class. When it comes to data analysis, opinion and feelings are not metrics. Truth is empirical and not subjective… otherwise it's not scientific method… we might as well let politicians dictate what truth is %)

  17. I think Philip is actually explaining his thoughts not the best way. My pov on the subject is that all those things that influence your consciousness are materialistic, but the point is that even if you are colorblind for example, that doesn't mean your consciousness is failing, it's just being "jammed" by materialistic reasons. That doesn't have to mean consciousness is pure matter, i think it's the 3rd option that the consciousness is just present with matter at the same time. At the end of the day we have consciousness and live in a materialistic universe so i see no reason's to believe either its pure magic or matter.

Sorry if i made english mistakes.

  18. I hate when people say this is the start and don’t recognize the thousands of cultures and millions of people who did the same exact thing thousands of years before the person they describe’s civilization and people were even on the Earth…. Kind’ve like Christopher Columbus “discovering” the Americas while there were thousands of people on it and I can’t exactly say it’s white washing because there’s Europeans who did the same thing before Galileo.

  19. CANCEL JOE ROGAN NOW…SHAME.. LEFT WHOOPI GOLDBERG OUT TO DRY…I ASK FOR SAME TREATMENT…NO EMOTIONS 🆘🚨🆘🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🚨🆘🚨 CANCEL NOW..

  20. This was so frustrating to listen to- what this guy was trying to explain went totally over joes head over and over again, and you can tell goff seems defeated toward the middle where he asks for coffee lol. But equally frustrating is that he could not figure out a better way to describe what he was saying?! If I'm not wrong, he is saying that particles- matter itself, like atoms, particles, whatever it may be, has "consciousness" (which should have been important to define from the beginning by the way), and thats perhaps why feelings or experiences are associated with chemical or physical characteristics, phenomena. With that mindset you can of course be like "well is a rock conscious??" but he even says that the level of organized information lends itself to the idea of a hierarchal consciousness, or having varying degrees of "experience". I think Joe kept thinking about human consciousness and this guy for whatever reason was not able to describe that that isnt really what he's talking about in the first place. The word consciousness is definitely too slippery to just jump into a conversation about without defining it.

  21. This guy went on a whirlwind to explain something soo simple! A living form cannot live without consciousnes. Regarless of whether you're a vegetable in bed, a dog, a plant, a cat, a completely functional human body, if you're alive, your conscious, you can feel and think to the capacity you can because your brain might be damaged and/or your body, but you're still conscious if you're alive…. In my view consciousness is what gives every living thing the ABILITY to live and perform to what they are physically capable of. THE END

  22. I would say that everyone sees colour different because the colour vibrates with people differently that’s why your wife won’t always agree with the paint colour you like
