Twenty four hundred years ago, Plato, one of history’s most famous thinkers, said life is like being chained up in a cave forced to watch shadows flitting across a stone wall. Beyond sounding quite morbid, what exactly did he mean? Alex Gendler unravels Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, found in Book VII of “The Republic.”

  1. What I think is missing from this is how the sun is supposed to represent absolute truth, the truth beyond the forms we see when leaving the cave. This absolute truth we can only glance at, use tools to observe, but if we look directly at it as we are blinded and harmed. We can always seek better ways to look at the sun, but we will never be able to look at it unassisted. Therefore we must look towards truth not with the goal of ever learning it and only with the intention of getting closer to it.

  2. I like philosophy, but I never knew that I would think of a philosophy video as cute. Great writing and animations!

  3. Can anyone help me answer why empirical evidence should not be fully relied on in favour of philosophical thinking? (for an essay)

  4. I know this allegory is always a translation, but why illustrate it dramatically and wrongly with those shackled hanging when it was their legs and the heads were chained?

  5. Fish under the depths of the seas know nothing of the world above. In the world above the ants know nothing of what's happening on the 99th floor of a skyscraper and on the 99th floor, Man, behing all his creations think this ends with us.
Perhaps when the dolphins jump from the sea they go down to the depths to tell the fish but the fish dont believe. At any rate its all Trumps fault.

  6. Wow…I’m watching this after arguing with my wife and son about how little they seem to care about the coronavirus. Stop listening to me, YouTube!
