MIT Media Lab graduate Alexander Reben SM ’10 is an artist and roboticist whose explore the intersection of humanity and technology.

“To me, there’s no huge distinction between artwork and building robots, or artwork and building AI systems,” says Reben, “I guess I had always been on a sort of nontraditional, weird | trajectory.”

His most recent work, a project called amalGAN, starts with a machine that can read his body’s signals—brainwaves, electrodermal activity, pulse, eye gaze—while showing him images on a screen. An AI algorithm repeatedly adjusts and combines the images, attempting to zero in on the elements he likes the most.

Whether AI or robot components, Reben sees each new technology he uses in his art as a tool he can continue to incorporate and enhance in his future projects.

“Building up your toolbox of items you can use is like building up colors you can use to paint with, “says Reben.
